In the teaching of the twelve assemblies, the two terms "self-perfection" and "other-perfection" are explained in order, with the latter five each. For example, being a human being, being born in the central land, etc., the appearance of the Buddha, the teaching of the sacred Dharma, etc. The gate of manifest realization from higher to higher is the place where the lower becomes the realization of the higher. If one has faith, one exerts effort; if one exerts effort, one cultivates mindfulness, etc. The gate of abandonment is to teach abandoning this, starting from this. What is that? Like in the Sutra of Minor Matters, starting from the exhaustion of defilements, those who are outside of this, and those who think that merely hearing and thinking about this Dharma is enough, and those who are completely discouraged from meditation, and those whose accumulations are not complete. "Monks, I declare that I have exhausted the defilements while knowing and seeing." The first part of the sutra passage, "like this," abandons the person. By striving to engage in meditation, etc., the second is abandoned. The example of minor matters abandons the third. The example of the boat abandons the fourth. The gate of complete transformation of letters is where letters that are completely established for other meanings are completely transformed into others. For example, verses such as "A person who does not have faith does not do," etc. The gate of wasting and not wasting is where complete wasting and complete not wasting are taught, as well as the means for both, and the complete distinction between the two. For example, as stated in the Sutra of Good Birth, complete wasting is excessive attachment to external and internal objects. Among these, external objects are characterized by home and wife, etc. Internal objects are the five aggregates of clinging. Complete non-wasting is being free from excessive attachment to these two. The means of complete wasting is not arising at all, and even if it arises, not being mindful to exhaust defilements. The opposite of this is seen as the means of non-wasting. In this regard, it is like this: "Alas! Son of a noble family, this is adorned by two things: between shaving hair and beard and going forth, and between exhausting defilements and completely knowing." This closely shows non-wasting and its means, so the opposite characteristic will become wasting and its means. Complete non-wasting

It is shown by the tune of the verses of distinction. This monk is beautiful, close to peace and exhausted of outflows. Thus it is said. It shows renunciation and exhaustion of outflows. The exhaustion of outflows is also: free from desire and already free, without clinging, extinguished. Having defeated the army of demons, it is to hold the last of the body. Thus it is said, this, after being free from desire on the worldly path, abandons the lower fetters with the transcendental path, and also abandons the upper fetters, and also shows the complete abandonment of inner things. Because it is the time when the cause and effect are exhausted, it should also be regarded as what is shown by this. The opposite of this should be regarded as the distinction stated up to the point of complete exhaustion. The gate of distinguishing and establishing individuals is: where it is said from the perspective of so many individuals, it is shown by this, for example, like that which comes from the sutra like that which is made of water, that is said from the perspective of distinguishing between two individuals, three and four, namely ordinary beings and those who see the truth. Ordinary beings are said to be of three kinds: not white, slightly white, and very white. Seeing the truth is four kinds, the four fruit positions. The first three are learners, and the last one is a non-learner. The gate of distinction is: where the meaning of questions such as the four possibilities is stated, for example, in the impermanence sutra, whoever sees this well, does he see all forms? Whoever sees all forms, does he see all well? This is the four possibilities. The first possibility is: for the four aggregates such as feeling, not perversely clinging to permanence, purity, happiness, and self, fully knowing, and truly observing what should be abandoned. The second possibility is: for form, perversely clinging to permanence, purity, happiness, and self, not being what should be fully known, and also not being what should be fully abandoned, but truly observing. The third possibility is: for form, not perversely clinging to impermanence, etc., truly observing what should be fully known and what should be abandoned. The fourth possibility: for feeling, etc., the opposite of the former. Just as the four possibilities for form are, similarly, it should be applied extensively to all feelings, etc. Whatever should be done has been done, all those do not know that there is another arising from this, thus it is said.
