Therefore, inference enters through the gateway of elimination. Some assert that one's own object of measurement is established through the elimination of what is not, hence, according to our own system, substance-dharmas are not like the non-Buddhist's assertion of many dharmas unified into one, but rather the self-characterized is the substance. Substance-dharmas are also substances, because if one substance is made manifest, then all dharmas inseparable from it become objects. Elimination is the elimination of others, and its dharma does not transcend it. Therefore, in essence, it should be understood that it is impossible for multiple eliminations to gather in one substance, or for different entities to be the same substance in meaning, like permanent entities. Thirdly, there are two parts: the main body and the conclusion. The first part has three sections: definition, division, and determination of its meaning. Firstly, the definition of general and particular is that, in the aspect of apprehending as one that which is different, the distinction from others of a different class is the definition of the general; and in the aspect of elimination, the distinction from all objects of the same class as oneself, which are different in time and place, is the particular. Thus, the single elimination and the collection of two that cause distinction from things that are dissimilar and similar are the definitions of the general and the particular. Secondly, dividing it, directness is for different aspects such as meat and trees, and the preceding and following times are included in the higher. There are two types of general and particular, making four divisions. Direct particulars are present, so they are different substances, and higher particulars depend on time, so they do not exist as substances in the past and future, but since there is a present object, it is a difference that prevents oneness. Thirdly, among the three: refutation, establishment, and abandonment, the first has two parts: reasoning and scripture. The first part has two parts: refuting the view that substances are different and the view that they are the same. Firstly, some non-Buddhists, such as the Vaiśeṣikas, say that the general manifestation is a different substance. If the general were a different object from the manifestation, it should be visible, but since it is not, it is refuted. The second part has three points: refuting that the general is one and the particulars are many; refuting that the general is many and the particulars are many; and refuting similar generals. The first point has two parts: the proponent and the refutation. Firstly, some such as the Sāṃkhyas say that the chief, the general, is of the same essence as all transformations, so the general manifestation is one substance. Secondly, there are three: non-apprehension of what should be visible, unreasonableness upon analysis, and extreme consequences. Firstly, if it is one substance, then the

If the general characteristic that is inseparable from the essence needs to appear, it is negated by whether or not it can appear. Second, another fault is that if many different particulars with contradictory aspects such as places like the east, past, future, and present times, and sizes like large and small, are related to one general characteristic and an inseparable essence, for example, if one tree grows, then all trees in different places, times, and aspects grow simultaneously, etc., all clear phenomena, their nature of arising and ceasing also becomes one. If this is not the case, then on one essence, the two parts of being destroyed and not destroyed, being born and not born, etc., are contradictory. Third, there are three points: becoming non-pervasive with limbs, becoming a sense consciousness with concepts, and becoming contradictory things as one substance. First, there is also the fault of being too extreme, because if the general characteristic and the particular are one substance, then how can one deny that there is one substance with limbs that pervades all things such as the head and feet? Because the general characteristic and the limbs are the same. Second, in addition, the sense consciousness that grasps the particular also becomes conceptual, because it is impossible for one substance to have both appearance and non-appearance, so if the particular appears, then the general characteristic must also appear. Third, all contradictory things such as black and white, light and darkness, also become one substance, because they are the substance of one general characteristic. Second, refuting that multiple general characteristics are related to multiple particulars. There is a proponent's view and a refutation. First, some say that even if there is not one general characteristic, the general characteristic that is related to each particular such as yak, etc., also has multiple general characteristics equal to the number of particulars. Second, if this is the case, then the definition of a common general characteristic that is not individual is not established, because everything that is a general characteristic will become a double contradiction, and the establishment of refutation and establishment will also be destroyed, because if yak is established, then tree is not established, and if tree is negated, then yak cannot be negated. Third, refuting similar general characteristics. There is a proponent's view and a refutation. First, again, some do not accept that individual general characteristics are related, but yak, cypress, etc. have the characteristic of having branches and leaves, and there is one general characteristic with the same characteristics, and it and the particular things are one substance. Second, regarding this, refuting that there is similarity in meaning. Refuting that there is similarity in consciousness. First, the similarity of saying "this and this are similar" is only a combination of concepts, and the dharma combined by the consciousness of concepts does not exist in the thing itself. If the thing itself
