Directly contradictory expressions, such as saying "the impermanent sound is permanent." Contradictory through the force of expression, such as saying "permanent is the creator." Expressing through the difference of dharma, such as saying "eyes and so on serve others." If it turns upside down from that, it is called preventing the difference of dharma. If it is said that "eyes and so on are for others," then it is expressed from the aspect of the subject of dharma. Its contradiction is also called preventing the difference of the subject of dharma. In terms of desire, the two are the same when reversed. Similarly, in reasoning, there is a difference in the way of expressing the terms "sound is impermanent" and "impermanent sound," but the meaning is the same in impermanence itself. Similarly, saying "the sound of impermanent sound" is also expressing through the way of distinguishing the subject of dharma by dharma, distinguishing sound from permanent sound. Saying "possessing the impermanence of sound" expresses that the subject of dharma, sound, distinguishes impermanence, distinguishing sound from the impermanence of sound. Both of them want to understand that sound is impermanent, so there is no difference in meaning. Those that can be understood through the sign of having been done are correct, but because they cannot be understood through "because of gathering and accumulation" and so on, they are contradictory. The faults and merits of these meanings are the objects of expression in the case of self-benefit inference, and the faults and merits of sound and consciousness are in the case of other-benefit, but for the sake of simplification, they are placed together. Just as various distinctions have been made for seeming reasons, should distinctions also be made for valid reasons? Even if such distinctions were made, there would be nothing impossible, but because there is not much need for it, it has not been done. If one knows that the property of the subject is not established, and thinks that there is no need to establish it, even if one knows that it is not established, establishing such a reason is making a decision. Other-benefit inference is the language of showing the sign that one has seen to others. The one who promises to state the proof is the proponent, the one who promises to state the refutation is the opponent, and the two who promise to state the victory or defeat are the witnesses. Among them, there are two kinds of statements: the statement of proof and the statement of consequence. The first is to establish the reason with three aspects complete in one's own system, as stated in the twenty kinds of signs. In terms of the statement of consequence,

The ancient scholars wanted to divide the four "overreachings" into fourteen. First, regarding the classification of the way "overreachings" are stated, they considered there to be four types: when both the reason and pervasion of the "overreaching" are not established, when only the reason is not established, when only the pervasion is not established, and when both are established. The first example is, to a Buddhist, "Sound, the subject, is not measurable, because it is permanent." If stated like this, both the reason and pervasion are not established by valid cognition, and the opponent does not accept it either. The second example is, "Sound is not produced, because it is permanent." If said like this, the reason is not established by valid cognition, and the opponent does not accept it either. The third example is, "Sound is permanent, because it is measurable." If said like this, the pervasion is not established by both valid cognition and the opponent's acceptance. The fourth has four situations: both are established by valid cognition, for example, to a Buddhist, "Sound is impermanent, because it is produced," which seems to be refuted by the opponent; only both are established by acceptance, if someone accepts that sound is permanent, and the reason and pervasion are established by valid cognition, then by negating the commitment through acceptance, the "overreaching" becomes correct. Both the reason and pervasion are established by acceptance, if someone says that sound is apprehended by the eye, and permanence pervades it, then if it is said that sound is permanent, because it is apprehended by the eye, if it is determined by valid cognition that sound is impermanent, then the commitment is negated by valid cognition; if accepted, it is negated by acceptance; if neither exists, then there is no negation at all, these are the three situations. The reason is established by valid cognition, and the pervasion is established by acceptance, if someone says that production is pervaded by permanence, then if it is said that sound is permanent, because it is produced, like this, regarding the commitment, whether negation exists or not has three situations, as before. The reason is accepted, and the pervasion is established by valid cognition, for example, to someone who says that sound is permanent, if it is said that sound is not produced, because it is permanent, like this, for this situation, the three situations of whether negation exists or not are the same as before. Thus, among the fourteen "overreachings," seven appear to be correct, and seven appear to be incorrect: for situations where both are not established, it is refuted by non-establishment; for situations where the reason is not established, it is refuted by the reason not being established; for situations where the pervasion is not established, it is refuted by the pervasion not being established; for situations where both are established by valid cognition, and there is no negation of the commitment at all; for situations where both are accepted, and there is no negation of the commitment at all; the reason is established by valid cognition, the pervasion is accepted, and there is no negation of the commitment at all; the reason is accepted, the pervasion is established by valid cognition, and the four situations where there is no negation of the commitment are refuted by the opponent, therefore these seven appear to be incorrect.
