Third part. First part, generally thinking about the sound meaning of what is to be inferred based on the reference, and two things to determine the current meaning. First part, where the sound of direction refers to, and two ways of how it refers. First. Therefore, the sound of direction refers to the collection of the dharma to be established and the dharma-possessor to be established, and is used as a real name. Because the meaning of the collection covers all aspects of the direction. Therefore, either the dharma or the dharma-possessor can be used as a nominal name. Second part, generally showing the difference between the sound real name and the nominal name, and explaining in detail the real name and the nominal name in the current situation. First. The difference between these two names is that they want to express without relying on other necessary reasons, so the name prefixed before can understand the self-existent form of the thing itself, which is the real name. Relying on other famous names, due to certain reasons and necessities, understanding and recognizing other things from the things expressed by the real name, this is considered a nominal name attached to other names. Second part, two ways of using real names and ways of using nominal names. First. For the meaning of the collection distinguished by the dharma to be established, that is, the dharma-possessor who wants to know, the sound of direction is certain for the wise, even for the heretics, from the beginning, so there will be no confusion. Second part, the reason for attachment, the necessity, and the three harms to the real name. First. The nominal name is to take similarity as the reason, and to rely on other reasons for association. Second part, the real name, and two ways to eliminate the unreasonableness of it. First part, the necessity of attaching dharma as direction, and the necessity of attaching dharma-possessor as direction. First. Because you shouldn't attach it without necessity, then why attach it? Because just calling dharma as direction, that is, the thing to be established, if it is said that this is the subsequent of the dharma of reason, then will it be thought that the contradictory dharma also has a subsequent? In order to eliminate the error of mistakenly thinking that the contradictory reason is also a correct sign, so as to recognize that the reason is the subsequent of the thing to be established, or in some cases, it is attached in order to make the combination of words easy to express and coordinate. Second. If you don't say "direction dharma", but say "dharma of dharma-possessor", then among the three types of similar, dissimilar, and both that you want to know, you can't be sure that it is only the first type, so it will be confused with the other two.

If it is said that the "property-possessor" which has a basis is not the way of the other two, and if all extremes are blocked, then the narration will take a long time. If the actual name of the "property" of the property-possessor to be known is directly stated, although it can be achieved, when composing verses etc., the composition will be damaged, therefore it is named "pakṣa" ( पक्ष, पक्ष, pakṣa,品), because the meaning can be easily understood without confusion by the short words, therefore it is said "pakṣa". Secondly, it is divided into debate and answer. Firstly, if it is said that both "pakṣa" and "property-possessor" are similar in having many objects of application, therefore are they the same in not understanding what is to be known? Secondly, it is divided into the actual answer and showing it with an example. Firstly, there is a difference from the perspective of fame. Secondly, if it is summarized in this context, although the application of the word "pakṣa" alone is many, here the word "pakṣa" related to dharma refers to the basis of debate itself, for example, the word "having hands" does not apply to all things having hands, but refers to the elephant. Even if it is related to the word "dharma", the word "property-possessor" cannot necessarily determine only the basis of debate, for example, the word "having a head" applies to all things, but not to individual things such as elephants, therefore there is a difference in fame. This is the summarizing verse. Thirdly, the harm to the actual situation is: the single "dharma" and the single "property-possessor" are not the object to be proven themselves, because they do not have the characteristic of being the basis of inference without being established or excluded, and these two single aspects do not have this characteristic. Secondly, the actual basis of dependence on the current situation is: Taking the pervasion that is established and not excluded by valid cognition as the basis of inference is the characteristic of what is to be known, and this is the basis of dependence of the first mode, and it is established by perception or inference, this is the first mode, namely pakṣa-dharma. Secondly, regarding the basis of dependence of following and reversing, there are three: refutation, establishment, and abandonment. Firstly, it is divided into the prior pakṣa and its refutation. Firstly, regarding the basis of dependence of the latter two modes, some followers of Śāntideva say: that which has or does not have the dharma to be proven is the similar pakṣa and the dissimilar pakṣa. Because if the similar and dissimilar pakṣas are not contradictory, then there cannot be a correct reason, so they think that these two are truly contradictory, and they are conceited. If so, then there will be doubt that a third category that is not these two will appear, because some who do not understand that the object of inference valid cognition is the mixture of self-character and general character hold it, and they separate substance and negation to speak. That is, if the substance dharma is established, then they consider the essence to be the same.
