Immediately after that, self-cognition arising from dependence on other conditions, yogic direct perception arising from meditative stabilization, and, from the perspective of individuals, the direct perception of ordinary beings and the direct perception of noble ones—thus, direct perception is differentiated. Moreover, if we follow the tenets of each school, the four types of direct perception are the system of the Sutra school, because they both acknowledge external objects and self-cognition. Secondly, the Vaibhashika school does not accept self-cognition, so there are three types of direct perception. The Chittamatra school does not accept external objects, so the former three are included in self-cognition, thus there are two types: yogic and self-cognition. Thirdly, there are four types: sense direct perception, mental direct perception, self-cognition direct perception, and yogic direct perception. In the first, there are three aspects: definition, proof of it, and ascertainment of meaning. In the first, there are two aspects: negation and affirmation. First, it is mistaken to define sense direct perception by dividing it into two: sense direct perception and its valid cognition, as before. Second, therefore, according to our own system, it is the non-conceptual and non-erroneous consciousness that arises from the self-cause, the sense faculty (དབང་པོ།). Second, to prove that definition, there are two aspects: proving that it arises from the sense faculty and proving that it is non-conceptual and non-erroneous. First, it is established that the sense faculty is a capacity that grasps the object of sense consciousness, just like fire and smoke. Because the consciousness that sees the object invariably follows and reverses that sense faculty, it is thus established. Second, because one's own object appears clearly from each distinct part without being mixed, non-conceptuality is established. If it were conceptual, the parts would not appear clearly from each distinct part, but would be mixed into one in the face of conception, thereby establishing a term. Because it grasps the own-characteristic of the object as it is, there is no error. Third, regarding the meaning of the term, if both the object and attention must be present as causes of consciousness, then why is it called "sense consciousness" and not "object consciousness" or something else? Both the object and attention are also causes of other consciousnesses, but the sense faculty is the uncommon cause of that sense consciousness. That is why it is called "sense consciousness," just as the sound of a drum requires a stick, etc., but the uncommon cause is called the sound of the drum. Second, mental direct perception has three aspects: determination of the entity, determination of the nature, and refutation of objections to it. In the first, there are two aspects: determination of mind, and the definition of its direct perception. First, initially, mind is the mental faculty that arises immediately after the cessation of both the object and sense consciousness. Second, that mental faculty

The non-conceptual, unerring knowledge that arises in dependence upon this is mental direct perception. Second, to ascertain its nature, there are three aspects: the manner of arising, the reason for becoming a valid cognition (pramana), and the examination of the state of arising. First, for example, if a jewel is placed in the center of a room with five glass windows, and silks of five colors are placed at each window, just as its reflection is cast upon the jewel, so too, five mental perceptions arise simultaneously after the five sense faculties. Even if mental direct perception does not arise, it does not become multiple streams of individuals, just as multiple sense consciousnesses looking outward do not become multiple streams, because they look inward and are encompassed by a single self-awareness. In the second aspect, there are two ways: how it is a valid cognition and how it is uncertain. First, because there is no error in the true meaning, it is a valid cognition. In the second aspect, there are two parts: a brief statement and an explanation of its meaning. First, because the mental faculty has no continuity, it cannot be determined by its own power. Second, the reason why it cannot be determined is that because the material sense faculty arises from the previous moment, the sense consciousness has an uninterrupted continuity of similar arising. However, the mental faculty does not arise from the mental faculty; it arises only when the previous sense faculty has just ceased. Therefore, the mental faculty has no continuity. The so-called worldly people call external and internal phenomena such as pots and happiness as direct perception, but in reality, only the cognition of meaning and self-awareness can do this. Therefore, the direct perception of the mental self-portion cannot be determined and cannot be given this name, just as when a person cuts a tree, it is said that it was cut by the sattva guna. The reason for this is that the mind does not depend on others, but because of the key of not having autonomous continuity. Like these, there are many points in Panchen Lama's intention that are worth exploring. Look at other records to see if there is similar content, and it will be clear. Third, regarding the state, there are three: refutation, establishment, and abandonment. First, regarding the moment after the sense direct perception, whether the mental direct perception arises alternately between the two, or whether it is considered to arise at the end of the complete continuous stream of sense direct perception, both views have flaws. If they arise alternately, both are equally without continuity, so it is unreasonable that the sense direct perception is determined by its own power, while the mental direct perception cannot be determined by its own power. If it arises at the end of the continuous stream, then for the first moment and the subsequent moments of the sense direct perception, etc.
