Like 'earth giving' is the sound of a name, and like 'trees' is the sound of a category, the wise divide them into two. Secondly, refuting wrong conceptions about the characteristics of the base, there are two types: refuting wrong conceptions about direct perception and inference. The first type is divided into three: refuting the conception that what is not direct perception is direct perception, refuting the conception that what is direct perception is not direct perception, and refuting the conception that what is and is not direct perception are the same. The first of these is divided into two: considering non-conceptual illusory appearances as valid cognition, and refuting the consideration of other non-conceptual things as valid cognition. The first is divided into two: the proponent and the refutation. First, some people consider that, like mistaking the light of a jewel for a jewel, is an object; like mistaking a midday cub for a midnight dream, is a time; like the appearance of a yellow conch shell and the appearance of trees walking, etc., there is a part that is not mistaken about the object in the part of the illusory appearance, so there are those who consider direct perception to be valid cognition. Second, since those appearances do not assign the aspect of self-character, they are not direct perception, because it is easy to establish that one thing cannot have both appearance and non-appearance. If one knows that it is an illusion, and from the signs of those appearances one ascertains the aspect of the thing, then it is possible for inference to become valid cognition. The second is divided into two: the proponent and the refutation. First, some say that perceiving the color of conch shells, fire, water, etc., and the tactile sensations of softness, burning, etc., is direct perception, considering that perceiving other non-conceptual things is valid cognition.

To say that what is not the same is the same. Second, the two are not the same because the objects of mental consciousness with conceptualization and sense consciousness without conceptualization are different. Second, in inference, there are two refutations: thinking that what is is wrong, and thinking that what is wrong is right. In the first, there are two: the former's assertion and its refutation. First, recognizing the jewel itself from the light of the jewel is not inference. If the jewel is taken as the reason, then the reason and the subject do not exist. If the light of the jewel is taken as the reason, then the reason is not established. If only the light is established, then it is uncertain. Second, if that is the case, then the sprout of the rice plant inferring the seed of the rice plant, etc., most inferences with the effect as the reason will become wrong, because establishing the sprout is not established, etc., similar to the case of the light of the jewel. Therefore, although it is not possible to specifically establish the rice plant to be established, it is possible to grasp its characteristics there because of the power of seeing it elsewhere. Second, there are two: the former's assertion and its refutation. First, some things with parts have permanent fire because there is truly existing smoke, like the many retinues of Ishvara, like that, the self-proclaimed reason and the thing to be established are wrong, even if it is not a valid cognition, but in terms of establishment, it is a valid cognition for the mere meaning of fire and the part to be established, so they say. Second, such a reason does not have three modes because the reason and the subject cannot exist. Merely establishing fire and smoke, there is no difference in the reason distinguished by truly existing and permanent. Merely understanding the meaning is not understanding the meaning because of such a reason, but in the mind, one understands merely fire through smoke. Moreover, such a reason cannot be a means of understanding because there is no connection, for example, there is a pot here because there is a pot with rabbit horns. Third, on the valid cognition that defines the defined on the basis, there are two: question and answer. First, is the certainty that those valid cognitions are valid cognitions with non-deceptive wisdom realized from oneself or from others? If it is determined from oneself, then no one will be confused about the distinction between valid and invalid cognition. If it is determined from others, then that must also be determined by others, so it will become infinite. Second, there are three: refutation, establishment, and abandonment. First, some assert that it can only be determined from oneself. Some say that it can only be determined from others. Both of those abandon the reasoning of the nature of things and the assertions of Dharmakirti and other logicians.
