Since the sense faculty, being corporeal, is material, it cannot function as a seer. And since the sense faculty and its object are simultaneous, there is no connection between them, so it is unreasonable for them to be the seen and the seer. Secondly, there are two parts: presenting the prior position and refuting it. Firstly, some who are similar to this assert that although the sense faculty is not the seer, if it is not simultaneous, it cannot be the object, so the object and the consciousness of the object-possessor exist simultaneously as the apprehended and the apprehender; some people of the Land of Snows (Tibet) hold this view. Secondly, there are two parts: refuting the actual point and refuting the response that avoids that fault. Firstly, this is unreasonable because the object and consciousness are simultaneous, so there is no connection between the two. If that were the case, it would be contradictory for the object to be without a cause and yet for the consciousness of the object-possessor that knows it to exist, because it would follow that it is without a cause. Secondly, there are two parts: the response and the refutation of the response. Firstly, they say that the object of the previous moment is the cause of what is cognized by consciousness, and the object that is simultaneous with oneself is the apprehended object. Secondly, then, since the consciousness has already been established, having arisen from the object of the previous moment through the sense faculty and attention as conditions, there is no need for an object that is simultaneous with the consciousness itself. Secondly, establishing according to the tenets of the Sautrāntika school that asserts external objects, there are three parts: the main point, dispelling doubts, and the conclusion. Firstly, therefore, according to the tenets of the valid cognition Sautrāntika school, the first moment in which the object of cognition, the dominant condition of the sense faculty, and the immediately preceding condition of attention are combined is what generates the appearance similar to the external object, and the consciousness that arises similar to the object in the second moment from that is the resultant consciousness, because the two are cause and effect, so the apprehended and the apprehender are not simultaneous. Secondly, if that is the case, since it is similar in the cause of consciousness, why does consciousness arise similar to the object and not similar to the sense faculty? For example, although food, time, and warmth are the cause of a son, just as he arises similar to the form of his parents, so too, consciousness arises similar to the object, which is the nature of its essence. Thirdly, therefore, for an object such as a pot, there are two results: generating the subsequent moment that is similar to its own kind, and creating an appearance similar to itself in the sense consciousness that apprehends itself. The mind that apprehends the pot, for example, also has two aspects: the apprehended aspect of the object consciousness and the apprehending aspect that cognizes it, as well as self-awareness.

It is earth. Second, regarding the Yogācāra school, there are three points: refuting the investigations of others, establishing Yogācāra, and refuting arguments against it. The first point includes refuting the acceptance of external objects and relying on worldly conventions. First, if the view of Yogācāra is established, then the basis of gross objects, even if they are extremely subtle particles, if they are solely indivisible, cannot serve as the basis of gross objects; and if there are many, then indivisibility is unreasonable, because it is separate from these two. If there is an external object apart from consciousness, there is no reason for the arising of appearances, because there is no creator of appearances, so there are no appearances, just as if a barren woman has no son, there is no appearance of the son's color. Second, some logicians say that it is valid to agree with the mind that has not been investigated or analyzed, as Candrakīrti asserts, but this is unreasonable, because if the investigation of conventional terms relies solely on worldly conventions, then in the face of the uninvestigated mind, the application of direct perception, inference, establishment, refutation, etc., and the distinction between valid and invalid cognition, etc., all systems of valid cognition are unreasonable, and therefore contradictory. Thus, among the two, matter and consciousness, matter is negated, and therefore the mind-only is established. Second, establishing the Yogācāra school includes briefly stating the two signs and specifically explaining the certainty of simultaneous perception. First, the proof that the apprehended and the apprehender are not different entities is that consciousness is clear and cognitive, and there is no knowable that does not possess clarity and cognition, so all knowables are established as mind, which is the sign of clarity, and it is established by the certainty of simultaneous perception. Second, for any dharma that is certain to be perceived simultaneously, it is impossible for it to be a different entity, and if it is a different entity, it is impossible for that sign of simultaneous perception to exist. Therefore, just as in the appearance of two moons, blue and its apprehension are also established by this sign as not being different entities. By negating the extreme of the dissimilar side, that different entities have the sign of the dissimilar side and a common basis, it is negated. Third, refuting arguments includes refuting arguments that are similar to the refutation itself, and refuting arguments that the distinction between valid and invalid cognition is unreasonable. The first point includes argument and answer. First, regarding such a Yogācāra system, in order to refute arguments, some Madhyamikas say that the continuum of mind is the same reasoning as preventing that which has limbs, and the moments of mind are like the parts of dust, past and future.
