When naming things, it is not considered that they have a constant common basis. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, "If there is nothing, how can there be permanence?" This is just a fabrication. Third, a common conclusion is drawn for appearance and exclusion. Sense consciousness does not express terms of affirmation and negation, but only judges appearance. For example, it is like a mute person with eyes. Although consciousness does not actually see its object, it can distinguish whether it is exclusion or not, so it is like a blind person who can speak. If there is no self-awareness, then no matter how many terms there are for seeing and consciousness, they are meaningless. Because of relying on the experience of self-awareness, consciousness can enter the realm of the unconscious. Therefore, self-awareness is like a person with complete senses, who can communicate the two kinds of knowledge of conscious and unconscious. This is an intermediate chapter. The third part is debate and refutation, including: refuting that communication is impossible if there is no universal; refuting that if it is other-exclusion, it will fall into mutual dependence; refuting that other-exclusion is not established if there is no object to be excluded; refuting that it is unreasonable to examine whether exclusion is established as a thing; and refuting the argument that a common basis is impossible if exclusion has no universal. First, there are two parts: debate and answer. In the first part, the Vaisheshika school says: Because the expressed universal does not exist in things, the expressing sound of the universal established by it will become without cause. If so, all universal terms will be interrupted, like a causeless lump. In the second part, there are two parts: answer and refutation of the unreasonable. In the first part, sounds are not established after things pre-exist, because they are attached according to the intention of expression. The expressing sounds do not necessarily have to depend on the expressing object that exists from the beginning. In the second part, there are two parts: refutation of the unreasonable and answer. In the first part, the opponent says: If the sounds of universals are not established from the aspect of things, then it will be meaningless for communicators to combine the sound expressing things and the sound expressing the bearer of things, because all things are independent self-characteristics, unmixed, and separate from universals. In the second part, the essence of things is only self-characteristic, and anything can be expressed according to the intention of expression, whether or not to exclude other characteristics.

In order to understand these desires, it is merely the combination of the expression of dharma and the expression of the possessor of dharma, but the separate establishment of the objects of the two expressions does not exist in reality. Second part: debate and response. First part: The king (?) says that understanding the concept of a tree is through excluding the non-tree that contradicts the tree, which is an expression of other-exclusion. According to this view, the two concepts of tree and non-tree are mutually dependent. Since one cannot be established independently, the other cannot be established either, and ultimately both will disappear. For example, understanding tree depends on non-tree, and understanding non-tree depends on tree, so it is impossible to establish either one independently, and if one is not established, the other concept cannot be understood. In this way, all terms will be interrupted, so it is impossible to call the exclusion of non-this a symbol of other-exclusion. Second part: common ground and the real answer. First part: the fact and the refutation of its fault. First part: You who want to assign symbols to the nature of things themselves, if the symbol "tree" does not exclude the non-tree that contradicts the tree, then the essence of the tree cannot be understood. If the expression "this is just a tree" does not exclude something like water, then it will be understood in common with water, and it is unreasonable to understand it only as a tree. If you want to exclude, if you understand the meaning of tree before assigning the symbol, then there is no need to assign the symbol. If you don't understand, then when you say "tree," since you don't understand the non-tree that contradicts the tree, the tree cannot be established. If so, then all the terms of affirmation and negation about the tree will disappear. Therefore, what you said will inevitably turn around and apply to yourself. Second part: refutation and counter-refutation. First part: In response to this, the universal realists say that we establish things by excluding contradictory things, that is, by negating in advance, but we only want to affirm. Therefore, when we see a tree with branches and leaves, we call it "this is a tree," and even when we assign terms later, we understand the universality or the self-characteristic related to the universality, rather than relying on negation, so there is no error. Second part: Then, when you first assigned the symbol, you only thought that it excluded things that are not possessed and impossible, thinking "this is also a tree, and there are other trees," not non-trees.
