If the pulse beats, the fever becomes unbearable. Ten or so pulse beats are like the progression of fever, and the degree of fever can be known by the number of pulse beats. If the pulse beats less than five times, unable to exceed four times, it is just a slight cold. If it beats three times, it is a medium cold. If it beats twice, it is a severe cold. If it cannot exceed once, like the death pulse of ascites, the cold penetrates deeply and is the pulse of death. Therefore, generally speaking, the flawless state of a disease-free pulse is shown in this way. However, the pulse of some disease-free people, like strings of pearls or coral, is uneven in size, large and small, from top to bottom. Or, from any direction such as color, it does not stay in the normal path but protrudes above the back of the hand. Or, any of the organ pulses are incomplete. Or, the pulse is interrupted and stops beating. Or, it almost stops beating, or like the words "etc.", the pulse splits into two, like sisters. In addition, there are various uncertain situations such as uneven speed. Therefore, when diagnosing a disease, it is necessary to determine what the regular pulse is like in a disease-free normal state. If the basic pulse or regular pulse is not understood, then when the pulse is observed during the onset of the disease to judge life and death, etc., errors that do not correspond to reality will occur. What is that like? The male pulse is thick and obvious, the female pulse is thin and fast, and the child's pulse, that is, the pulse of a pregnant woman, is bulging and curled, and just touching it can make novice doctors mistake it for a fever. The way to avoid mistakes is that whether it is thick, fast, or curled, if it beats five times per breath, it is not a fever. If it beats more than five times, it is a fever. Similarly, the Bodhicitta pulse is soft and slender, and it is easy to mistake it for a cold. However, if examined carefully, it will not be misled by the number of pulse beats. Similarly, any of the organ pulses being incomplete, or the pulse being interrupted and stopping, etc., are easily mistaken for death pulses. However, after careful examination, distinguish whether it is the basic pulse or the cessation of disease, etc., and if it is not confused with the signs of death, it must be distinguished that death cannot be determined by this alone. Therefore, for those who have no record of pulse during a disease-free period, at the beginning, that is, before making a judgment, ask, "Did your regular pulse have such problems before?"

It is essential to inquire diligently about how the physicians describe the condition, etc. Tenth, regarding the diagnosis of diseases. There are two types: general and specific. First, the general differentiation of hot and cold diseases based on the six general pulses: 'Strong' means the pulse beats forcefully; 'Expanded' means the pulse rises towards the surface of the skin; 'Coiled' means the pulse appears coiled within the muscles like an iron skewer; 'Fast' means the pulse beats rapidly; 'Tense' means the pulse is taut like a bowstring; 'Hard' means the pulse does not feel empty when pressed, but rather firm. Any of these six indicates a hot pulse. Furthermore, if the pulse is strong and expanded, it indicates heat in the upper part of the body; if it is coiled and fast, it indicates heat in the middle part of the body; if it is tense and hard, it indicates heat in the lower part of the body. This is how the pulses are interpreted. 'Upper' refers to heat in the mouth, 'middle' refers to heat in the middle of the body, and 'lower' refers to heat deep within the body. Although named in this way, the nature of heat is that upper and middle heat are new heat from disturbances and epidemics, while lower heat is old heat. Cold pulses are the opposite of the six above: the opposite of 'strong' is a weak pulse; the opposite of 'expanded' is a pulse that sinks deep into the muscles; the opposite of 'coiled' is a hidden pulse, meaning it is difficult to detect within the muscles and appears weak; the opposite of 'fast' is a slow pulse; the opposite of 'tense' is a lax pulse; the opposite of 'hard' is a pulse that feels empty when pressed. These six are cold pulses. For these six, the terms 'upper cold' etc. are applied in the same way as before. However, here it is considered that lower cold is new, while middle and upper cold are old. Heat is new when it is in the outer skin or mouth, or in the bones in the middle of the body; it becomes old when it enters the internal organs. Cold, on the other hand, first enters the internal organs, and when it becomes old, it affects the outer skin. These pulses are also differentiated as described here. All diseases can be categorized as either hot or cold, so the above is a description of the general pulses. Second, the specific diagnosis of pulses for individual diseases also has two aspects: identifying the type of disease based on the different pulses, and the three sections of the pulse (cun, guan, chi).
