Therefore, it should be discharged and made to enter the bladder. From then on, the urine of the lower part of the night is urine that is in accordance with the disease, so after it is discharged, it should be stored in a container and observed. Second, the time to observe the urine: In order to clearly see the color, vapor, and kuya (Tibetan: ཀུ་ཡ།), in order to examine it, it should be examined in the morning when the sunlight shines on the container. Third, the characteristics of the container for observing urine are that, in order to prevent the container from changing or affecting the color of the urine, it should be observed with white porcelain bowls, white basins, and white iron containers. If a pottery container is used, it will turn black, a copper container will turn red, brass will turn yellow, and a stone cup with a red interior will turn red, etc., because it will change the color of the urine, so it should be avoided. However, if it is necessary to observe urine in pottery or other containers, white pieces such as the roots of white reeds or the white scapula of animals should be placed in the container. In this way, the true color of the urine can be seen, so it can be examined. Fourth, the way of transformation is: food and drink are separated into essence and dregs in the stomach, and the dregs enter the intestines and are again divided into thick and thin. The thin part becomes urine and flows from the root of the mesentery to the bladder. The essence of food passes through the liver and is transformed into blood, and the dregs of the blood are stored in the gallbladder and become bile. Bile is divided into two parts, essence and dregs, the essence becomes the body's serum, and the dregs of bile become the kuya (Tibetan: ཀུ་ཡ།) of urine. The kuya (Tibetan: ཀུ་ཡ།) flows through the veins and is stored in the bladder together with urine. Because the way of transformation is like this, the color of urine is affected by food. Kuya (Tibetan: ཀུ་ཡ།) is produced from the blood and bile, so when the humors of fever and blood-bile increase, kuya (Tibetan: ཀུ་ཡ།) also increases, and when it decreases, it also decreases. Therefore, the hot and cold conditions of the body will be revealed in the urine, just like a merchant talking about the quantity of goods during a transaction. Fifth, showing the characteristics of urine in a normal, disease-free state: the color is like the essence of melted butter, slightly white and yellow, with the natural smell of urine, but not unpleasant.

The appearance, the size of the steam, and the duration of dissipation are moderate, not too big nor too small, etc. The flowers, i.e., the bubbles, are neither too big nor too many, nor too small nor too few, but balanced. The bubbles are neither too big nor too small, and the water covers and spreads evenly throughout. If left undisturbed, the cold, hot grease is neither too thin nor too thick, like the grease in a puddle, i.e., a small puddle. When the steam dissipates, it turns round from the edges and inverts. After the water color has completely changed from the previous one, if a clear, yellowish-white color appears, that is disease-free urine. The sixth is diseased urine, which is the opposite of disease-free urine. There are two types: general and specific. Generally speaking, there are nine methods of observation in three time periods. The time is immediately after urination, when it is still hot, observe the four: color, steam, odor, and flowers. When the heat dissipates, observe the bubbles and grease. When the urine is about to cool, observe the timing of the inversion, the manner of inversion, and the three stages after complete cooling and inversion. To explain those meanings in detail, first, the method of observing the color of the urine when it is hot is: like spring water that gushes upwards from underground in the middle of a spring, if it is blue and thin, it is urine of wind disease. Yellow indicates bile disease, white indicates phlegm disease, red indicates blood disease, and like rinsing with water in a container called "རྒྱ་ཤལ་" (རྒྱ་སྐྱེགས, a type of container), if it is slightly brownish, it is yellow water disease, like rinsing sheep dung intestines with water, and the water appears brownish. If the color is dark and the odor is foul, the foul odor should be observed as dark phlegm. If the urine color is mixed, it indicates mixed and combined diseases. If white and yellow are mixed, it indicates a combination of phlegm and bile, etc., as mentioned above. If it is like black oil, i.e., sesame oil or clarified butter that has been boiled for a long time, like blackened refined oil, it indicates an aggravation of epidemic and bile diseases. If the color is reddish-yellow, thick, and has a bad odor, or contains pus, it is urine of contusion or disorder. If the urine color is black or like a rainbow, it indicates poisoning. The method of observing the steam is: if the steam is large like boiling water, it indicates urine with aggravated heat disease. If the steam is small and does not dissipate for a long time, it indicates latent heat disease or chronic heat disease urine. If the steam is small and dissipates quickly, it indicates the nature of phlegm and wind.
