Rinse each portion of mercury with twenty-five portions of superior water, fifteen portions of medium water, and seven portions of inferior water, so that the mercury will not be wasted. In the three processes of large, medium, and small refining, the mercury becomes viscous, and black oil, grease, etc. are mixed together from the bottom, and hot water cannot penetrate, making it difficult to separate. At this time, rinse the soil, etc. with hot water until the oil is reduced to a small amount, and wipe off the oil stains from all places with hairless cotton. Stir the mercury with cotton, and the oil will be absorbed by the cotton. Squeeze the cotton, and the larger mercury particles will fall into the container and gather. The small mercury particles adhering to the cotton, together with the cotton, should be dried at a suitable temperature like a tile, then covered with strong ash, carefully crush the cotton, pour it into a smooth container such as an iron utensil, add an appropriate amount of strong ash, and gently grind it with your fingertips. Blow away the strong ash, and the remaining mercury will gather. In the medium refining process, when the mercury is mixed with impurities and difficult to separate, it can be filtered with a cloth.
