In general, the cause for fulfilling aspirations is the accumulation of merit. Depending on the differences in karma, faculties, and fortune, some are believed to be reborn in that pure land immediately after this life, while others are reborn in various future lives. However, if one possesses strong faith and aspiration, one can achieve rebirth without relying on others, solely through the accumulation of vast merit. For example, those who hear the names of Sukhavati (the Pure Land of Bliss) and the Teacher (Shakyamuni Buddha) have accumulated great merit in the past. As stated in the sutras: "In the future, when the sacred Dharma is greatly decaying, such vast categories of Dharma, truly praised by all Buddhas, extolled by all Buddhas, permitted by all Buddhas, and capable of quickly attaining the great wisdom of omniscience, those sentient beings who hear these teachings have gained exceedingly well, generated roots of virtue, made special offerings to past Buddhas, and will be blessed by the blessings of the Buddhas. After hearing, they will gain joy, great joy, hold, memorize, read, fully understand, and extensively and truthfully explain to others, delight in meditation, and even write them down and make offerings; those people will also accumulate great merit, which is immeasurable." It is also said: "Those who have not accumulated merit will not hear these things. Those heroes who have achieved will hear these words." It is also said: "Whoever hears such excellent Dharma will remember the Sugata (Buddha) and gain joy. Whoever generates faith in the Buddha's Bodhi (enlightenment), those were our friends in the past." In accordance with the meaning of these scriptures, being able to hear the names of the Sugata, which are as rare as a treasure, indicates that they have accumulated vast merit in the past, and it is certain that they will be reborn in Sukhavati. Otherwise, it is difficult for ordinary beings to know what their past and future states will be like, and whether they have the fortune for liberation and omniscience.

Not only that, even great Arhats cannot truly understand their lineage, just like the roots of virtue of the householder Palgye. Therefore, although the attainment of results depends on the differences in beings' karma, faculties, and fortune, if one has great faith and aspiration, one can know that it is impossible to be without fortune. Likewise, generating faith in Sukhavati and the guide Amitabha will also accomplish a great accumulation of merit. As stated in the sutras, the merit of giving by filling lands as numerous as dust motes with precious jewels is surpassed by the merit of generating faith in Amitabha, just like what was quoted earlier. Furthermore, upon hearing the name of that Sugata, one will not turn back from the path of Bodhi, and will obtain dharanis until the end of the Bodhi tree, will not be born as a woman, will become a celibate, will be born into a good family, will obtain excellent samadhi, will delight in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, will encounter roots of virtue that are supremely joyful, and so on. The sutras say that one will obtain immeasurable qualities. In short, the excellence of the qualities of the Sukhavati field is inconceivable. All those born there will see the Tathagata residing under the Bodhi tree, thereby manifesting the realizations of the noble ones and becoming non-retreating. All will proceed in that very life to the end of the path with qualities that are far superior to those of other noble ones. Like this, the qualities are immeasurable. Therefore, even to accomplish qualities equal to those of the Bodhisattvas of that realm by one's own power, one needs to have gone through countless eons of practice. However, for those who have faith and aspiration, by the power of the past aspirations and inconceivable wisdom of the Sugata Amitabha, just like drawing water from a well, they are drawn to that realm by the name of great compassion, thereby freely attaining vast qualities, just as the wealth that poor people obtain after toiling for a long time cannot compare to the wealth obtained by merely encountering a precious jewel. Therefore, the mind
