It is not like other cycles of existence, with causes for rebirth or without causes for rebirth, not arising from mere fancy, nor from the power of seasons. It is not from a lord or a cause of nature, nor from its own essence, that is, self-generation. It is not from a constant creator such as Ishvara, nor is it annihilation in causelessness. Why? Because it arises from ignorance, not knowing causes, and from being connected with karma and existence, know this as awakening or wisdom. Secondly, the actual path. Explaining the three fetters that are contrary to the path. The favorable condition is diligence. The nature of the path is the three trainings. Firstly, considering distorted ethics and asceticism as supreme, and regarding one's own five aggregates as distortedly having a self, which is the view of clinging to views, and having doubts about the Dharma of the path and the result. These three are what bind one to cyclic existence, know this as closing the gates of the city of liberation. Secondly, liberation depends on oneself. If one does not rely on one's own path, then the protection of others, and borrowing paths, etc., are of no help. Therefore, first, understand the scriptures through the wisdom of hearing and thinking, then protect ethics, and possess single-pointed concentration. Strive to know suffering, abandon its origin, realize cessation, and cultivate the path, which is the nature of the path to liberation, that is, relying on the path to manifest the Four Noble Truths. Thirdly, generally explaining the three trainings, and specifically explaining the training in wisdom. Firstly, because it is superior to outsiders, etc., one should always train in the three trainings of higher ethics, higher wisdom, and higher mind, that is, the training in concentration. Thus, the other one hundred and fifty or so trainings, such as the two hundred and fifty precepts of the Vinaya, etc., which are taught in the Great and Small Vehicles, are all perfectly included within these three trainings. Secondly, there are two instructions on how to definitely emerge from the side of defilement and how to properly engage in the side of purification. Firstly, there are two methods: how to turn the mind away from this life and how to turn the mind away from all of cyclic existence. Firstly, there is a summary and a detailed explanation. Firstly, calling out "Lord," the mindfulness belonging to the body is...

Thus departed. All who desire the path of liberation must enter through this, therefore, it is closely shown as the one path to tread. O monks! To purify sentient beings, to truly transcend suffering and displeasure, to realize the righteous Dharma, and to manifest Nirvana, the one path to tread is this: mindfulness of the body. Thus it is. One should diligently guard this mindfulness of the body, for when mindfulness is lost, all dharmas will be destroyed. Secondly, there are two: contemplating impermanence of life, and contemplating the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment. In the first, there are four: contemplating the uncertainty of when one will die and meditating on impermanence; contemplating the certainty of death and meditating on impermanence; contemplating other ways of meditating on impermanence; and the conclusion of these. Firstly: life is disturbed by many causes of harm, both internal and external, and is as impermanent as a water bubble struck by the wind, therefore, it is amazing that one can have the leisure or space to exhale after inhaling, and to wake up after falling asleep, and not die during this time. Secondly, the end of the body is either burned by fire into ashes, or eventually dries up, or eventually rots, and finally becomes an impure, foul-smelling corpse, without any essence. Limbs and parts disintegrate separately, turning into dust, wearing away and rotting. Know that from now on, this body has the nature of being able to separate individually. Thirdly, even the earth, Mount Sumeru, and the great oceans, which appear to be hard and stable, will be burned by seven suns at the end of an eon, and these sentient or formed things of mountains, seas, and earth will not remain even as a trace of ashes, so how much more so the extremely fragile human body, how could it not perish? It will surely perish. Fourthly, all things, internal and external, are impermanent and without self-mastery, without a refuge to save from suffering, without a protector to help, without a place to rely on, therefore, from this meaningless cycle of existence, like a tree on water, O best of men, may your heart be weary and depart from samsara.
