Commentary on the Friendly Epistle, Garland of White Lotuses. Commentary on the Friendly Epistle, Garland of White Lotuses. Herein resides the treatise called Commentary on the Friendly Epistle, Garland of White Lotuses. Om Svasti. With the blazing light of the sword of wisdom, uprooting the clinging vines of all ignorant darkness, bestowing the light of the wisdom of the two knowledges, may the Lama Manjughosha protect me. The meaning of the profound and vast intention of the Buddha's speech, the noble Nagarjuna, skilled in explaining it as it is, the Garland of White Lotuses, commentary on the Friendly Epistle of good exposition, spread this according to the Lama's words, filled with joy. Furthermore, in explaining this Friendly Epistle composed by the noble Nagarjuna, there are four parts: the meaning of the title, the translation homage, the meaning of the text, and the meaning of the conclusion. The first is: In the language of India: Suhrllekha Friendly Epistle). In Tibetan: "Friend," that is, to a friend, the prince named Delightful Conduct, and because it is sent without directly meeting, it is a "letter." The second is: Having parted from all the pain of faults, being gentle and possessing the glory of the two benefits, having become youthful without the decay of old age, I prostrate to him, this is the homage made by the translator. The third is: Initially, virtue is the meaning of the head, in the middle, virtue is the meaning of the text, and finally, virtue is the meaning of the entire conclusion, and there are three. The first is: From the perspective of vowing to compose, urging to listen, and advising that it is appropriate to listen with an attitude of humility. The first is: Addressing as one who is suitable as a vessel for listening to the excellent and sacred Dharma, which is the nature of complete qualities, then the author of the treatise, Nagarjuna, I, in order to make your mind aspire to merit, will slightly compile these verses with excellent melody, which arise from the precious collections spoken by the Sugata, who possesses sixty branches of melody, and you should listen. The latter is twofold: humility from the perspective of words and humility from the perspective of meaning. The first is: For example, the body of the Sugata, even if made of inferior wood, no matter how clean or unclean the form is made, is worshiped on the crown of the head by the wise. Similarly, my poetry, even if the combination of words and so on is bad, but because it speaks of the profound sacred Dharma.

Therefore, it is taught not to despise but to accept. Secondly, the teachings of the Great Hero, who naturally restrains the faults of the three doors of body, speech, and mind, are good in the beginning, middle, and end, pleasing to the ear, and of numerous meanings. Even if you have already understood it in your own mind, just as naturally white lime, under the influence of moonlight and other conditions, wouldn't it become even whiter than before? Indeed, it would. Secondly, regarding the content of the text, it explains faith as the basis for the path of higher realms and definite goodness, and the nature of the path itself. First, it briefly explains the six recollections, such as the Buddha, which are the basis for faith, and elaborates on the latter three recollections. First, the Victorious One who conquered the four maras taught the six recollections of the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, generosity, discipline, and deities. These were taught with great excellence, each in its own way: the Buddha is the spontaneous accomplishment of the two benefits; the Dharma is the unerring truth of the two truths; the Sangha possesses both learning and liberation; generosity is the cause of abundant wealth; discipline is the basis of pure qualities; and deities are one's own witnesses, or the attainment of special results through the practice of the Dharma of higher realms. Therefore, one should recollect the accumulation of qualities. Secondly, the recollection of deities, generosity, and the recollection of discipline, these three. First, the seven virtuous actions and the three paths, which are the ten: in terms of body, abandoning killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct; in terms of speech, abandoning lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, and idle talk; and in terms of mind, abandoning covetousness, harmful intent, and wrong views, and always relying on correct views. Even if it is not a natural transgression, one should abstain from all kinds of alcohol that weaken the power of the senses, and similarly, one should gladly accept a virtuous life that does not harm others and does not become a cause of recklessness. In this way, one will obtain a special result, which is the attainment of the state of the gods. Secondly, because enjoyments are impermanent, wavering, and have no reliable essence, and no matter how much one obtains, one cannot be satisfied, one should know that one should benefit virtuous monks and Brahmins, as well as suffering poor people, etc.
