To all virtuous friends, please abandon impure giving and properly bestow giving that is pure in intention and object. The necessity for this is that in the next world, there is no better friend than giving. Third, your ethics, because they are free from the faults of broken vows, are not diminished, and because they are complete with the limbs that are the antidote to broken vows, they are not inferior, but are complete or vast, the fruit inclines towards peace, is not mixed with worldly paths, and is not defiled by the cause of broken vows, evil motivations of afflictions, etc. Therefore, please rely on those who possess the four qualities of pure ethics. Ethics, like the earth which is the basis for moving beings such as people and non-moving things such as mountains and houses, is said to be the basis for all the qualities of higher realms and definite goodness. Second, regarding the nature of the path, there are three parts: a summary, an explanation, and encouragement to practice these meanings. First, through skillful means, generosity, ethics, patience, diligence, meditation, and likewise wisdom, all are vast and immeasurable, and are embraced by wisdom that does not conceptualize the three spheres, thus they are perfections. Develop these in your own mindstream and become the lords of victory who cross the ocean of existence. Second, there are six: generosity, ethics, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom. The first is: the family that reverently honors and serves their father and mother is like being with Brahma and with the teacher, because in the world they are worthy of offering, not separated from those two. By offering to them, in this life one will become famous for qualities such as knowing what has been done and gratitude, and in the next life one will also be born in higher realms. The second part has four points: the ethics to be protected, abandoning its opposing factors, accomplishing the conducive factor of mindfulness, and a general explanation of the benefits of mindfulness through examples. The first is: abandoning harm to others, which is referred to by wealth and fame, namely killing, stealing, namely taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, and lying, these are the four branches of ethics, and the branch of mindfulness abandoning alcohol and the branch of asceticism.

Thirdly, one should completely abandon attachment to eating afternoon meals at improper times, delighting in high beds and soft couches, as well as singing, bodily dances, and various garlands and ornaments. One should emulate how the noble Arhats of the past guarded their precepts. Possessing these eight branches is called Uposatha, and by this, one can bestow or grant desirable bodies of desire realm gods to males and females, as they will not be born as hermaphrodites, etc. Secondly, stinginess in not wanting to give away possessions, deceit in concealing one's own faults and falsely displaying oneself as having virtues, attachment to the pleasure of enjoyment and union with women, indifference to anything that should be taken or abandoned, arrogance in thinking oneself to possess virtues when one does not, craving for desirable objects of contaminated realms, hatred for undesirable objects, and pride arising from lineage such as royalty and Brahmins, beauty, extensive knowledge of inner and outer sciences, youth, and power or great dominion—thinking about these qualities of oneself, becoming attached and savoring their taste, one must regard this as an enemy! Thirdly, the mindful one who cultivates virtue and protects the mind from contamination is the place of nectar, the non-dying state, i.e., Nirvana, while the unmindful one is the place of death in samsara, as taught by the Buddha. As the sutra says: Mindfulness is the place of nectar, unmindfulness is the place of death. The mindful do not die, the unmindful always die. Therefore, for the sake of continuously increasing your virtuous qualities, please always be mindful with reverence for virtue! Fourthly, if someone who was previously unmindful becomes mindful later, that is as beautiful as the moon freed from clouds. For example, Nanda who was full of desire, Angulimala who was deluded by an evil friend and killed nine hundred and ninety-nine people, Vidudabha who was full of hatred, i.e., King Ajatashatru who was influenced by an evil friend and killed his own father, and Sukha who was full of both desire and hatred and killed his own mother so that others would commit adultery—all these later relied on the antidotal dharma, and the former two escaped from the enem
