If spoken out of anger, it is a Saṃghāvaśeṣa. The second case is: Furthermore, if a monk, like a friend or one born from the earth, becomes angry and harbors hatred, thinking, "No matter what, this person is a Brahmachārin and a forehead," he accuses a pure and stainless monk with a defeating Dharma that is unrelated to Nirvāṇa. Then, at any time, whether asked or not, the dispute is also unrelated to Nirvāṇa, and the dispute is also unrelated to Nirvāṇa, like the wealth of a great rich man, the nun Utpalavarna, and seeing male and female beasts engaging in impure conduct, merely by thinking otherwise in his mind, he has taken some Dharmas that lead to defeat. If that monk abides in anger and speaks out of anger, it is a Saṃghāvaśeṣa. The second kind of offense arising from admonition is fourfold: division of the Saṃgha, siding with the division, reviling householders, and causing displeasure. The first is: Furthermore, any monk like Devadatta, in order to divide the harmony of the Buddha's Śrāvaka Saṃgha, which has entered the same path, strives and makes effort, initiates a dispute that leads to division, and holds on to it firmly. At this time, the monks of this sect should admonish that monk with gentle words, saying: "Venerable one, do not strive to divide the Saṃgha's views and so on. Do not initiate a dispute that leads to division, and do not hold on to it firmly. Venerable one, please be in harmony with the Saṃgha in views, discipline, livelihood, and conduct. The Saṃgha has entered the same path, and is harmonious and indivisible, praising each other's virtues, rejoicing together, not arguing, desiring the fruit of Nirvāṇa, upholding the same precepts under the same discipline, the same Prātimokṣa, like water and milk mixed together. If the teacher's teachings, the three Piṭakas, etc., are clearly recited, one will be able to touch the bliss beyond Nirvāṇa in this very life. Venerable one, this basis for dividing the Saṃgha...

They should be advised, 'Give up this.' If the monks of this Sangha advise a monk like Devadatta in this way, if he gives up that basis, that would be good. Because before, it was only a sin. If he does not give up even at the end of the admonition, it will become a serious crime. In order to abandon that basis of division, he should be truthfully advised two or three times with the four karmas, that is, he should be asked repeatedly. He should be stopped by the true teaching. He should be truthfully advised two or three times. When he is truthfully taught, if he gives up that basis of division, that would be good, it is only a serious crime. If he does not give up even at the end of the statement, it is a Sanghavasesa offense. The second case is: the friends of a monk like Devadatta, such as monks like Kokalika, etc., who speak discordant words, following the monks of division, there are one or two or three or more, if those monks like Kokalika say to the monks of this Sangha: 'Venerable ones, whether you do good or refrain from evil, do not say anything to a monk like Devadatta, such as doing good or refraining from evil.' What is the reason for that? Venerable ones, a monk like Devadatta speaks of the Dharma, speaks of the Vinaya. Or, in the noble path of the Dharma, he speaks of view, discrimination, effort, mindfulness, and concentration. The Vinaya is the boundary of correct speech. Living, or, is in accordance with the meaning of the Dharma. The Vinaya is like speaking of gentleness and friendliness, even if he says so, but his own rules are Dharma view, Vinaya practice. A monk like Devadatta, having correctly taken up the Dharma and Vinaya, having fully grasped them, says that he establishes terms following the teachings of the Teacher, even if he says so, it is permissible to establish terms for others. This monk speaks knowing the meaning, not unknowingly, because this monk desires in his mind and endures with reason the basis of division that he has examined, we also desire and endure it.' If they say so, the monks of this Sangha advise the monks like Kokalika: 'Venerable ones, you say so. Venerable ones, you do good.'
