Some discriminations arise, and for the sake of wanting good clothes, one goes to a householder or a householder's wife who is not a relative, and says this: "May the venerable ones, for my sake, donate whatever gold or other things are the price of clothes, and with those prices of clothes, may the venerable ones buy wool or such clothes, and please make me a suitable garment in due time." Having said this, if the clothes are made, that is, obtained, it is an offense entailing forfeiture. Or a merchant, or a certain captain sends these cloth prices. Please, venerable one, accept these cloth prices for the sake of compassion. If the messenger says this, then that bhikkhu should say to the messenger: Venerable messenger, bhikkhus are not allowed to accept cloth prices, such as gold and other unsuitable things, without making them suitable. We can only accept it if we get usable cloth in time. If the messenger says to the bhikkhu: Are there any instructions from the venerable ones, accepting the instructions of the venerable ones, making it suitable, what can be done? The bhikkhu who wants cloth should say to the messenger: Venerable messenger, this is the instruction of the bhikkhus, this is the acceptance of the instruction by the bhikkhus. For example, a monastery like playfulness and the people, or a layperson who has taken refuge in the Three Jewels and taken the five precepts, can be instructed to do the entrusted things. Then the messenger takes those cloth prices and goes to the place where the entrusted person is, and after arriving, says to the entrusted person: Venerable entrusted person, please know that you use these cloth prices to buy wool and other such cloth, and when the bhikkhu named so-and-so comes, give him suitable cloth in time. Then the messenger earnestly admonishes the entrusted person, and after correctly instructing, goes to the place where the bhikkhu is, and after arriving, says to the bhikkhu: The entrusted person instructed by the venerable one, I have correctly instructed him, please go to him, and he will give you suitable cloth in time. The bhikkhu who wants cloth goes to the entrusted person, Venerable entrusted person, I want cloth. Venerable entrusted person, I want cloth.
