To those who have attained accomplishment, to the perfect Buddhas, I prostrate. Thus, from the precious scriptures of the Buddhas, various names praising merits have been collected and arranged. Furthermore, in the Bhadrakalpika Sutra, there are the names of a thousand Tathagatas, and the names of five thousand four hundred and fifty-three Buddhas, the Sutra of Noble Liberation, the Hundred Hand Seals Sutra, the Three Skandhas Sutra, and so on. Moreover, the names of the Buddhas taught in the introductions and main texts of other sutras are very numerous, and should be known in those places. Thus, even hearing just one name of those Buddhas has immeasurable benefits, so it should be upheld with great reverence as much as possible. In the chapter of the Immeasurable Gate Dharani of the Ratnakuta Sutra, it says, "Prostrating to the Buddhas" is also a great lamp, and it will surely burn away afflictions. Those who hear the names of the Tathagatas will also become a great cause for their Nirvana. Reciting the names of the Tathagatas will also be separated from darkness; hearing the names of the Tathagatas will also be separated from darkness. In the Avatamsaka Sutra, it says, "O son of the Victorious One, seeing and hearing the Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha, and the merit that arises from associating with them, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, with inexhaustible wisdom of manifestation, makes it meaningful, without obstacles, extremely ultimately accomplished, not deceiving, fulfilling all wishes, continuously practicing all conditioned phenomena, attaining unconditioned wisdom, and the ultimate of the endless limit of the future, and attaining the supreme body endowed with all aspects of self-arising, should be understood. O son of the Victorious One, for example, if someone eats the essence of a vajra, no matter how small the essence of the vajra that is eaten, it cannot be digested, because it is not eaten by ghosts, transcends all places, and is below the...

will fall into the wrong path. Son of the Victorious One, why is that? It is because the Vajra Dharma is unmixed. Son of the Victorious One, similarly, even if the root of virtue generated for the Tathagata is ever so small, it completely transcends all places of activity in conditioned existence, and will become the ultimate unconditioned wisdom of the Tathagata. Son of the Victorious One, why is that? It is because the Dharma of the root of virtue generated for the Tathagata is unmixed. Thus it is said. Furthermore, it is also taught in this way through examples such as a small flame falling into the root. Also, in that sutra it says: Even the names of the Buddhas accomplish the deeds of the Buddhas for sentient beings. Son of the Victorious One, you should believe and understand. Even if some sentient beings see or hear the Tathagata, but because they are completely surrounded by the obscurations of karma, even if they do not have faith in the Tathagata, the root of virtue that they have seen is meaningful until complete Nirvana, I say. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, even after completely passing into Nirvana, after attaining countless aeons beyond count, merely hearing the words of their names, as if they were dwelling, greatly purify the merits of sentient beings, and even after such a long time has passed since Nirvana, the qualities generated for the Buddha will not be exhausted, therefore the greatness of the nature of the Buddha is in every way without fault and extremely pure. Similarly, it is said that even though they dwell in limitless directions, it is as if they actually dwell here. Furthermore, The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, dwell in the Dharmadhatu at the beginning of the past and the end of the future, possessing inexhaustible merit of equality, therefore possessing inexhaustible merit, the greatness of the nature of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, is in every way without fault and extremely pure. Thus and so forth it is said. Therefore, clinging to the nearness and distance of the Buddha in time and space is merely grasping by one's own conceptual thought. In reality, the wisdom Dharmakaya of the Buddha is unborn like the sky.
