These three obscure the unobstructed path of meditation, because these faults prevent the merits of meditation from increasing. Attachment to the five aggregates of existence, clinging to the enjoyment of objects such as forms, and being unable to engage in great virtuous conduct, with a mind that has become timid, these three obscure skillful dedication, because desire is narrow and attached to existence. Not trusting in the person who holds the Mahayana or the results of the Mahayana path, not being pleased with the teachings of the Mahayana scriptures, and misunderstanding the meaning of the scriptures by grasping them literally, thus making mistakes, these three obscure fearlessness or faith in the profound and vast Mahayana scriptures. Not cherishing the Dharma, therefore not regarding the sacred Dharma as primary or especially important, i.e., not diligently practicing, and being attached to worldly gain and honor, and not having the motivation to teach the Dharma for the benefit of others, or lacking compassion, these three obscure teaching the Dharma without regard for gain and honor, without stinginess. Having accumulated the karma of abandoning the Dharma, being separated from hearing the sacred Dharma, and lacking hearing, not knowing the objects and aspects of how to practice yoga, even if hearing a little, not having the ability to understand the vast scriptures, therefore not being able to determine the boundaries of what to take and what to abandon, i.e., hearing very little, even if having heard, not putting it into practice, not cultivating samadhi with the limbs of desire, effort, etc., these three obscure obtaining the ten powers. Secondly, indicating with virtue and bodhi, etc., what do these thirty faults obscure? First, generating the virtue that is the cause of bodhi, generating the mind focused on bodhi, entering or correctly holding bodhi through application, in this way the wise will become bodhisattvas, thereby obtaining the unmistaken path of seeing, thereby obtaining the unobstructed path of meditation, the skillful dedication that is the cause of making the path special, not fearing but having faith in the results of the Mahayana path, teaching the Dharma to those to be tamed without stinginess, and obtaining the ten powers, ultimately accomplishing the ultimate fruit, Buddhahood itself, these ten are virtue, etc.

There are ten. These are the ten stages from the beginning to the end of the path. If one recognizes these obscurations and properly abandons them through antidotes, then all the qualities of the path and the fruit will be accomplished. Third, it is indicated by "those of" etc. It should be known that the unfavorable aspects of these ten virtues etc., the thirty obscurations, are to be combined with each of the ten objects to be obscured, three by three, as has been said above. The following two verses, "The ten acting causes are" etc., although not the actual words of the root text, the great teacher Vasubandhu has stated in the commentary to this text, because it clarifies the meaning of the ten virtues etc. The meaning here is as follows: If we explain by combining the ten causes of the first verse, "The ten acting causes are birth" etc., and the example shown below, then what are the ten acting causes? The so-called "acting cause of birth" is like the arising of eye consciousness from the eye faculty; the "acting cause of abiding" is like the four foods causing the body to abide; the "acting cause of dependence" is like the essences depending on the container, the earth; the "acting cause of that which is to be depended upon or of clarity" is like a lamp clarifying the form in a dark place; the "acting cause of change" is like the fire that smelts; the "acting cause of separation" is like a sickle for mowing grass; the "acting cause of transforming into something else" is like a skilled craftsman or blacksmith transforming a gold ingot into a bracelet etc.; the "acting cause of trust" is like ascertaining fire from the sign of smoke; the "acting cause of understanding" is like the arising of certainty about the meaning from the cause and reason, that is, from argumentation; the "acting cause of attainment" is like attaining nirvana from the path. Thus, for the ten, such as the acting cause of birth, one should know to combine the ten, such as the eye, as examples of them. Having understood in this way, if we combine the current meaning with the ten virtues etc., then virtue is the acting cause of generation, because it generates enlightenment. Similarly, enlightenment is the acting cause of abiding, that is, it causes the continuum of virtue to abide; correct holding is the acting cause of dependence, that is, it depends on the abiding itself without deteriorating; the intelligent one is the acting cause of clarity, that is, all the characteristics of the cause and fruit of enlightenment.
