Commentary on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes - Garland of Light Commentary on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes - Garland of Light Rasmi mālā nāma madhyānta vibhāgasya śāstraṃ sya ṭīkā biharatisma. A treatise called "Commentary on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes - Garland of Light." With the all-pervading light of loving-kindness in the sky, Opening the light of wisdom for beings, Victorious one, kinsman of the sun, and son of the victorious ones, Having paid homage to invincible Manjushri, Not abiding in the extremes of existence and non-existence, permanence and annihilation, The gate that reveals the excellent path of the truly noble ones, The treatise on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes, I will explain by clearly distinguishing the words and meanings. Here, in explaining this treatise on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes, which was written by Maitreya Bodhisattva, one of the five great treatises, the profound essence of the path of all vehicles, great and small, which teaches the thusness that is free from the two extremes, there are four parts: the meaning of the title, the homage of translation, the meaning of the text, and the meaning of the entrance. First, in the Indian language, madhyānta, in Tibetan, དབུས་མཐའ། (domtha) means the middle and the extremes. Similarly, vibhāga means རྣམ་པར་འབྱེད་པ། (nampar jepa) meaning distinguishing. Kārikā means ཚིག་ལེའུར་བྱས་པ། (tsik le'ur jepa) meaning composing in verse form. In order, it explains what the thusness, the middle way that is free from extremes, is, and what the extremes of permanence and annihilation are, and what the treatise that distinguishes them without confusion is. All the treatises are written in verse form, which is composing in verse form. Second, it is indicated by "Homage to the noble Manjushri Kumara." Third, it is divided into two parts: a brief explanation in the form of a summary, and a detailed explanation of its meaning. First, it is indicated by one verse such as "characteristics, obscurations." If all the meanings of the beginning and end of this treatise are summarized, they can be summarized into seven aspects: first, what needs to be known is the characteristic of complete purification, and then the complete purification is also obtained from abandoning obscurations, therefore, the obscurations are explained. The obscurations are abandoned by focusing on thusness, therefore, thusness is explained. Similarly, with thusness as the object, the antidotes are the methods of meditation, what is the state in which the antidotes arise in one's own mindstream, and what is the result obtained from meditating on the antidotes, the above six points are a general explanation.

From here onwards, the unique path of the unsurpassable vehicle, which is shown as a special characteristic for attaining Buddhahood itself, has seven aspects. The second part includes: two explanations of the general nature of knowable objects and the non-common nature of the Mahayana. The first part includes: the object of knowledge, the path to be practiced, and the fruit of that path. The first part includes: the definition of knowable objects, the obscurations to be abandoned, and the suchness to be realized. The first part includes: two definitions of all-afflictive and completely purified. The first part includes: the nature of all-afflictive and how it is afflicted. The first part includes: from the perspective of the way it exists, from the perspective of the way it appears, and from the perspective of how to engage with their meaning. The first part is "unreal conceptualization exists." From this to "that is the Middle Way" is shown that in this impure samsaric appearance, the basis of appearance for all of this is just unreal conceptualization. That is to say, the appearance of samsara undeniably arises, and no one can deny that appearance. And that appearance also arises from the power of one's own conceptualization, and there is nothing else that is different from it. Therefore, in order not to deny conventional truths, samsara itself is regarded as existing due to conceptualization, and it is also called impure other-powered. The two aspects of the other-powered consciousness or conceptualization, the grasper and the grasped, as they appear, are not established as existing in that way. Just as high and low appear in a drawing, and a person appears in hail, they are merely conceptualized and do not exist as their own nature. Therefore, emptiness, which is empty of the two, grasper and grasped, exists as the nature of reality in the other-powered consciousness or conceptualization, or it is completely established. And in that emptiness, conceptualization exists as a subject. Since these two are determined as the nature and the dharma with nature, they are inseparable like fire and heat even when not realized, and at the time of realization, they arise as the wisdom that sees only the nature of reality. Therefore, conceptualization exists as a substance or exists without deceiving in name, so it is not merely emptiness, but even though it exists,
