Then, if emptiness does not transform in the state of sudden afflictions and conjunction, then from the beginning there would be no afflictions, therefore all sentient beings would effortlessly be liberated. If by practicing the antidote, later emptiness does not transform into a completely pure nature, or if purity does not appear, then striving on the path will become fruitless, therefore no one should strive on the path. Therefore, the nature of suchness, because of its self-luminous nature, is not an affliction in reality, and from the perspective of phenomena appearing with sudden defilements, it is also not unafflicted. Therefore, the realm (Sanskrit: dhātu, Devanagari: धातु, Romanization: dhātu, literal meaning: realm) is not to be spoken of as being either entirely pure or impure. Thus it is said. The title of the chapter is: From the "Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes," the chapter on the characteristics of the completely pure, which is the first explanation. Second, regarding the obscurations to be abandoned, there are three: general presentation, detailed explanation, and summary of meaning. First, it is shown by pervasive and partial, etc. If the adventitious stains that obscure the naturally pure Dharma nature are classified, it is like this: If it is done from the perspective of the continuum of the individual, the obscuration that exists in the continuum of those with the Mahayana lineage is called the pervasive obscuration. Because that obscuration obscures the way in which those Mahayana practitioners accomplish the two benefits of themselves and others, it is called great or pervasive from the point of obstructing the accomplishment of all great purposes. The obscuration of the continuum of those of the Hinayana Shravaka-Pratyekabuddha lineage is called the partial obscuration. Because until that is abandoned, that partial fruit of self-interest cannot be obtained. Also, if it is done from the perspective of how the afflictions themselves arise, no matter who it is, the arising of great attachment etc. even towards a small object is called the excessive obscuration. That which arises in accordance with the object is called the equal obscuration. Or, excessive means that any one of attachment etc. is particularly large; the three poisons being equal is also spoken of in the same way. In any case, from the perspective of how afflictions arise, there are two distinctions. Also, taking the cause of samsara as close due to ignorance, and abandoning samsara through thought, these two are the essence of the path, wisdom and means.

It is established from the aspect of showing obscurations. Among the six categories of obscurations shown in this way, the first and last two, i.e., three, are the opposing factors of the Bodhisattva path, the second is the opposing factor of the Hearer and Solitary Realizer paths, and the remaining two are obscurations of the common path of the Great and Small Vehicles. Secondly, there are three divisions: obscurations to liberation, obscurations to the ten virtues, and obscurations to the three antidotes. First, there are two divisions: the actual obscuration and how it obscures. First, it is shown by the two lines of verse, "affliction nature," etc.: What becomes an obstacle to attaining the state of liberation is the holding of the nature of afflictions such as ignorance, these nine types. Such afflictions with the nature of afflictions, such as ignorance, are called "completely binding," because they completely bind to existence. Such completely binding factors are obscurations. It is said. Among them, the nine completely binding factors are: ignorance, desire, anger, pride, doubt, these five non-views, and considering the three views of destructible view, wrong view, and extreme view as one, calling it "view," and view of holding views as supreme, and considering the two of holding morality and asceticism as supreme as one, calling it "holding as supreme," and jealousy and stinginess, thus there are nine. Secondly, how does it obscure? It is shown by "disgust and also," etc.: The completely binding factor of desire obscures the arising of disgust towards samsara, because by viewing contaminated things as virtues, the mind of attachment does not see the faults of samsara. Similarly, anger obscures the mind abiding in a state of equanimity, and the remaining seven commonly obscure the seeing of suchness, and in particular, pride obscures the knowledge of the faults of the view of the destructible aggregate, because it holds the meaning of viewing as "I" tightly. Ignorance obscures the knowledge of the state of the five aggregates, which are the basis of the destructible view, and does not understand its nature as it is. View obscures the manifestation of the truth of cessation, how does it obscure? Because in the view of self, under the power of the destructible view, at the time of cessation, one is afraid of the fear of annihilation of self, etc., and thus
