That which abides in emptiness itself, that which is seen by whatever object-possessing mind, is named emptiness by the name of the object. And that, from the aspect of not being established as its own essence, is called emptiness emptiness. How that mind sees that emptiness as the very true state of affairs, because it is not deceptive, it is called ultimate truth. And that ultimate truth, which is not established as its own essence, is the emptiness of ultimate truth. For what reason is emptiness meditated upon? It is meditated upon in order to obtain the qualities of the compounded path and the uncompounded fruit of nirvana, and that too has become empty of its own essence. Having briefly explained, for what qualities of the path and the fruit is emptiness meditated upon? From obtaining the two virtues up to accomplishing, it is explained in detail in two verses: The emptiness of the compounded and the emptiness of the uncompounded are for obtaining the complete purification of the two virtues of generating the compounded path and the uncompounded nirvana, or the qualities of existence and peace. If one grasps at and clings to those virtues as signs, they will not become completely pure. If one knows those to be empty and accomplishes them in a non-presumptuous manner, then it is for obtaining the complete purification of those roots of virtue. That which transcends the extremes of existence and peace, which is empty of its own essence, is called the emptiness of transcendence. That is meditated upon in order to always benefit sentient beings, and if one manifests nirvana that does not abide in the extremes of existence and peace, then one benefits sentient beings as long as space endures. However, if one clings to it with arrogance, complete purity will not be manifested, and if one accomplishes it with skillful means without clinging, it will be completely accomplished. That which has no beginning and no end is samsara, and that which is without inherent existence for them is the emptiness of that which has no beginning and no end. Thus, knowing samsara to be empty is meditated upon in order not to completely abandon samsara, for if one does not know samsara to be without inherent existence, one will see it as a fault and abandon it. The inexhaustible root of virtue in the realm of the aggregates without remainder is called non-abandonment, and that too, being empty of its own essence, is non-abandonment.

It is called emptiness. Even at the time of nirvana without remainder, in order to obtain such inexhaustible roots of virtue, one should meditate on this emptiness that cannot be abandoned. Through its power, the defilements of grasping and being grasped are purified from the inexhaustible roots of virtue, and having obtained the Dharmakaya, that root of virtue is made to never cease as long as space endures. The naturally abiding lineage is called nature, and its emptiness is the emptiness of nature. It is meditated upon in order to purify the lineage itself, so that the defilements of clinging to the lineage are purified, and the lineage becomes manifest. The marks and signs of a Buddha are referred to here as self-characteristics. That itself being empty of its essence is the emptiness of self-characteristics. It is meditated upon in order to obtain the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor signs. By purifying the clinging to truth in the marks and signs, complete accomplishment is achieved. The powers, fearlessnesses, unmixed qualities, and so forth of a Buddha, Here, all dharmas are spoken of. That itself being empty of that is the emptiness of all dharmas. It is meditated upon in order to purify the defilements of clinging to truth in the dharmas of a Buddha, so that complete accomplishment is obtained. Thus, Bodhisattvas, focusing on these emptinesses, practice such a path. These fourteen emptinesses that have been spoken of can also be condensed into two: that which is the non-existence of a self of a person and of the self of dharmas other than that is referred to here as the emptiness of non-entity. The two selves to be negated are completely refuted. That which is the entity or emptiness of the non-existence of those two selves, which is completely established and exists, is referred to as the emptiness other than the emptiness spoken of above, the emptiness of the nature of non-entity. It is said in that way in order to eliminate the clinging to two selves in the former, and to eliminate the imputation of emptiness as non-existence in the latter. Fifth is the practice: If it is shown by afflictions and so forth, although emptiness itself has no difference of pure or impure from its own side or state, it is reasonable to establish that for sentient beings, in appearance, there are stages of defiled and undefiled.
