Not entering the right path, and being obstructed by views of permanence and annihilation, one cannot attain liberation, and denying the very absence of wrong views, etc., because these hinder the attainment of liberation. Attachment to excellence obstructs the arising of the truth of the path in the continuum, because being deluded by evil views and vows and asceticism that are not the cause of liberation, one cannot enter the pure path. Doubt obstructs the understanding of the qualities of the Three Jewels by being of two minds, because certainty does not arise. Jealousy obstructs the complete understanding of the faults of gain and respect, because being attached to one's own gain and respect, and being unable to bear the excellence of others, as long as jealousy exists, one cannot properly contemplate the faults of gain and respect. Stinginess obstructs the complete understanding of the benefits of frugality, because it makes one hold on tightly, never knowing enough, no matter how much wealth is accumulated. Therefore, if the nine co-emergent afflictions are not abandoned, one will be bound in samsara and will not attain liberation. The second part is divided into two parts: teaching and explanation. The first part is taught by "other than virtue, etc., ten," meaning: what are the obstructions that obstruct the ten things to be obstructed, such as virtue, etc., that are different from what was said above? The second part is divided into three parts: thirty obstructions, ten things to be obstructed, and explaining these together. The first part is taught by "without combination and so on," meaning: what are the obstructions that obstruct the ten things such as virtue? They are carelessness, and laziness in not engaging in virtue, and even if one starts to engage in virtue, there is no correct way to make that root of virtue arise and grow from good to good, such as the true scriptures, etc. Not having these, the root of virtue will not arise and grow, because clinging to bad treatises that are not the path to enlightenment, etc., these will not make the roots of virtue arise and grow from good to good. Even if one has heard and contemplated the correct scriptures, etc., one does not have the yoga of properly attending to its meaning, or one does not properly attend to it, and one cannot abandon afflictions with proper attention, which is called non-yoga.

That which is not produced by meditative yoga, these three obscure the virtue that becomes the cause of enlightenment. They do not enter the root of virtue at all, or even if they do, they do not possess the correct hearing and thinking that is the cause of increase. Even if they have heard and thought, they do not possess the key point of meditation that is not reversed, so the virtue of attaining enlightenment itself will not be perfectly accomplished. Similarly, without faith and diligence, the root of virtue that becomes the cause of enlightenment will not arise. Due to laziness, not repeatedly remembering enlightenment and its path, the root of virtue will not particularly increase. The two accumulations that are the cause of enlightenment are either not complete or not perfect, that is, not united. These three are obstacles that prevent the fruit of enlightenment itself from being grasped or abandoned from the mind. Because the root of virtue for attaining enlightenment has not been accumulated, it has not been remembered, and the accumulations are not complete, I will not be able to hold the great Bodhicitta. Furthermore, not possessing the lineage of the Great Vehicle, or having the lineage but not possessing a spiritual friend who teaches the Great Vehicle, or even if possessing a spiritual friend, one's own mind is completely weary of the hardships of the Great Vehicle, these three obscure the correct grasping of enlightenment from the gate of application, so one will not practice the Great Vehicle. Also, not possessing the practice of the six perfections, associating with evil people who cause the Bodhicitta to decline, and associating with people who harbor hatred and slander towards the Dharma and individuals of the Great Vehicle, these three obscure the wise from becoming Bodhisattvas. This is the Bodhisattva of the stage of adhimukti-carya. One's own three doors of body, speech, and mind mostly engage in the causes of bad migrations, and any one of the three obscurations of afflictions, karma, and maturation is not purified, and the wisdom of hearing and thinking is not fully matured, these three obscure the attainment of the path of seeing by directly seeing the truth without error. The cause of naturally bad migrations refers to the co-emergent cause of bad migrations, as well as laziness that is not interested in virtue, and also the carelessness of not protecting the mind from contaminated dharmas.
