Nara. Here, in terms of the generality of samsara and nirvana, it is the extent of exhausting all limits in terms of conventional truth; in terms of ultimate truth, it is the ultimate completion without any acceptance or rejection of truly established entities, which should be understood by the wise. Although there are many ways to explain these points of the vajra words, for the time being, they are explained by clearly distinguishing them according to the treatise of the scholar Lodro Ten. Thus, these ten points, by truly revealing the conventional and ultimate nature of all phenomena encompassed by samsara and nirvana, are the vipashyana of suchness and allness. These ten points, which are so truly non-inverted, are called the Ten Vajra Words. What are they? In accordance with the above and the order, they are the nature of existence and non-existence, non-inversion, the nature of dwelling and illusion, non-discrimination, the nature of self-existing, constant luminosity, the nature of universal defilement and purification, the nature of being like the sky, without diminution, and without addition. These are difficult to understand by speculative wisdom, therefore they are called the ten aspects of the vajra words. Fourth, the practice of abandoning the two extremes, there are the first set of seven and the second set of seven. First, it is shown by difference and so on, because the path of the Mahayana abides in the Middle Way that is free from the two extremes. What is an extreme? Holding forms and so on to be different from the self or to be of the same essence is an extreme. The Middle Way that abandons it is like what is said from selflessness to having nothing, that is, relying on the aggregates to impute a self, but in reality there is no nature of the self itself. Because it does not exist, the imputed meanings of its various names, such as person, etc., do not exist either. Therefore, it is neither one nor different from the aggregates. Similarly, holding forms and so on to be permanent is the extreme accepted by the tirthikas, and holding forms and so on to be impermanent is the extreme accepted by the shravakas. Completely abandoning both of these, the Middle Way is to cultivate without elaboration, without thinking of forms and so on as permanent or impermanent. As it is said in the sutra: Form is neither permanent nor impermanent. To impute that a person and a dharma have their own essence and

Regarding the extremes of denying what merely appears nominally, there are two kinds: two that cling to the existence of a person and the existence of phenomena such as mind, and two that deny the non-existence of a person and the non-existence of phenomena. Among these, the Middle Way that abandons the superimposition and defamation on a person is that which, clinging to the middle between self and non-self, is non-conceptual. As it is said. The Middle Way that abandons the superimposition and defamation on phenomena such as mind is that which has no mind and no mental factors, no intellect, and no consciousness. As it is said. Regarding the extremes of viewing non-virtue and defilement as unfavorable, and virtue and purification as antidotal, the Middle Way that abandons those extremes is that which does not acknowledge, speak of, or discuss those two extremes. As it is said. Whatever conceives that phenomena and persons exist and that they exist permanently is the extreme of permanence; that phenomena and persons do not exist, or that they are annihilated and do not connect the continuum, is the extreme of annihilation. The Middle Way that abandons these two is that which relies on whatever is in the middle between permanence and annihilation. Furthermore, there are the extremes of the apprehended and the apprehender, and the extremes of defilement and purification, which are generally presented as two extremes. And what are they like? From ignorance to old age and death, clinging to defilement as the apprehended and the apprehender, and from the cessation of ignorance to old age and death, clinging to the purification of cessation as the apprehended and the apprehender, the Middle Way that abandons those two extremes is that knowledge and ignorance are non-dual. And so on, as explained extensively. There are three kinds of defilement: the defilement of afflictions, the defilement of actions, and the defilement of birth. Among these, the first, the defilement of afflictions, has the cause of views and the three poisons, and the three that still learn in existence. The antidote to these is to know emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. Second, the defilement of actions is the performance of virtuous and non-virtuous actions. The antidote to this is to know non-performance. Third, the defilement of birth is being born in existence, and after being born, before dying, the arising of mind and mental factors moment by moment, and the continuum of existence, that is, the successive dying.
