The three realms of samsara, To perceive them as something to be feared, and to have thoughts of fear and dread towards them, are extremes. The middle way that abandons these extremes is, as Subhuti says, for example: Like a painter who paints a terrifying image of a yaksha, and then, terrified, falls face down and faints. Likewise, understanding that samsara, which is conjured by one's own conceptualizations, and the fear of it, are like the example just mentioned, one abandons those two extremes. The former example, the example of space, is taught based on the Shravakas. Because the Shravakas do not understand that all dharmas are empty of inherent existence, they think of dharmas as something to be abandoned and emptiness as something that abandons. They take emptiness to mean the destruction of all dharmas, and for those who fear emptiness, in order to dispel that fear, it is shown that emptiness, like space which cannot be removed, is inherently present in all dharmas as their nature. The latter example, the example of the painter, is taught in order to prevent Bodhisattvas from becoming weary of dwelling in samsara for a long time. Other ways of explaining these two can be found in the commentary 'Blo brtan'. To conceptually grasp forms etc. as the grasped, and eyes etc. as the grasper, is also an extreme. The middle way that abandons these two is, as Subhuti says, for example: Like a magician who conjures an illusion, and that illusion devours the magician himself. Likewise, although the grasper and the grasped appear as two, they are not different in nature, but are established as mere mind. If one of these two is not established, then the other is not established either, so the example shows that in reality, the grasper and the grasped are not established. To perceive the uncontaminated as true, and the contaminated as false, is also an extreme. To teach the middle way that abandons these two, as Subhuti says, for example: Like two pieces of wood rubbed together by the wind produce fire, and as soon as the fire arises, it burns those two pieces of wood. Likewise, just as fire does not arise from wood that is not of the nature of fire, and that fire in turn burns that wood, so too, the non-true or contaminated, which is present in the stage of the path of joining,

Just as from the tree of discursive thoughts, the fire of pure, undefiled noble wisdom arises, and that fire burns and destroys discursive thoughts, those are like illusions arising dependently. Without distinguishing between right and wrong, it shows that they are not established by their own nature. When using antidote wisdom to perform the act of abandoning what is to be abandoned, clinging to the nature of the act as real, or thinking that wisdom is abandoning what is to be abandoned, thinking in advance and then acting, like this, the discursive thought of adding speculation to the act, and the discursive thought that the act of abandoning cannot be performed, or that it is not being performed, are both extremes of slander. What eliminates these is the Middle Way, like this, Light Protector, for example, if a lamp appears, all darkness will disappear, but, Light Protector, the lamp does not think like this: I have eliminated which darkness. However, relying on the lamp, darkness disappears, just like this, and so on, it is taught, just as the lamp has no discursive thought, but has the power to eliminate darkness, so too, the wisdom that eliminates obscurations is taught in the same way. For these obscurations that have been present in the minds of sentient beings since beginningless time, because they are difficult to abandon and powerful, therefore thinking that there is no opportunity for antidote wisdom to arise, clinging to the discursive thought that the antidote does not arise in the mind, and even if it arises, what is to be abandoned cannot be immediately extinguished, therefore thinking that abandoning and antidote accompany each other for a long time simultaneously, or thinking that they will become simultaneous states, these discursive thoughts are all extremes. To purify these, the Middle Way that is taught is, Light Protector, for example, in a house or a room or a small hut, after a hundred or a thousand years, no one has extinguished the lamp, there, if someone extinguishes the lamp, Light Protector, what do you think? Will the darkness think like this: I have accumulated a hundred or a thousand years, will I not leave from here? And so on, it is said, if light arises, darkness will definitely be extinguished, and those two simultaneously accompany the fire, and no matter how long the darkness lasts, it is not impossible to light a lamp there, through the example of this way to eliminate those extremes of discursive thought. Like this, the pairs of discursive thoughts that have just been spoken of, this single set of seven is substantial.
