How do I enter the truth of origination? The mind is the ultimate basis for clinging to self, so by examining it, one can enter the truth of cessation. By understanding the meaning of selflessness and mere awareness, one can enter cessation without fear of clinging to self or annihilation. Because one examines all phenomena and is not confused about the defiled and purified dharmas, one enters the truth of the path. Thus, in order to enter the four truths, first, the practice of the four mindfulnesses is established. Second, it is indicated by "the opposing side," etc. Thus, by meditating on the four mindfulnesses, if one fully understands in all aspects the opposing side to be abandoned and the antidote to be abandoned, then in order to abandon those opposing sides, the diligence of generating the antidote is the four kinds of diligence, namely, diligence to abandon evil dharmas that have arisen, diligence not to arise evil dharmas that have not arisen, diligence to generate virtuous dharmas that have not arisen, and diligence to prevent virtuous dharmas that have arisen from deteriorating. Third, it is divided into: briefly indicating how to generate the foundations of miraculous powers, along with the necessity; and explaining those meanings in detail. First, it is indicated by "abiding there, being serviceable," etc. Thus, by initiating diligence, abiding single-pointedly in that object, the mind becomes serviceable, and all the meanings of clairvoyance, etc., will be attained. In this way, that samadhi in which the mind becomes serviceable also arises from the cause of relying on the eight applications that eliminate the five faults. Second, it is divided into: the five faults to be abandoned; and relying on the eight applications of the antidote. First, it is indicated by "laziness and," etc. What are the five faults that hinder the accomplishment of samadhi? Not engaging in diligence due to laziness, and forgetting the instructions of samadhi, these two are obstacles to the preliminary practice of samadhi. The obstacles to the actual practice of samadhi are dullness sinking inward and agitation scattering various thoughts outward, these two are counted as one. When dullness, agitation, etc., arise when entering samadhi, one must properly apply the respective antidotes, but if one does not apply them in this way,

are obstacles. The antidote is that when dullness and agitation are pacified, if there is still excessive activity, that itself is the reason for shaking the Dharma. Thus, these last two are obstacles to distinguishing dhyana from higher to higher. Thus, laziness and so on are considered to be five faults. Second, it is shown by the place and so on. The four antidotes to abandoning laziness are: faith, desire, effort, and pliancy. If pliancy is accomplished, laziness will not arise. And pliancy is accomplished by effort. Effort is accomplished through the gate of desire for dhyana. The arising of desire is first due to believing in it and having faith. Therefore, the place of effort is the desire to manifest dhyana, abiding in desire is effort, the cause of desire is faith, and the result of effort is becoming extremely pliant. Therefore, these four abandon laziness. Similarly, the antidotes to the other four faults are, in order: mindfulness, awareness, attention, and equanimity. Mindfulness is not forgetting the object of the instruction, awareness is knowing and realizing the occurrence of dullness and agitation, attention is to consciously act as an antidote to abandoning the faults of dullness and agitation, and equanimity is to abide naturally and truly when dullness and agitation are pacified. Fourth, it is shown by the part of liberation and so on. By the feet of miraculous power, the mind is made capable, and after generating the roots of virtue corresponding to the part of liberation, with faith, desire arises for the acceptance and rejection of the four truths and one is able to control it, with diligence, one is able to control the practice of application. Here, the word "control" appears in the middle of the verse, which is called the intermediate clarification. It should be known that "control" should be added to the beginning and end as well. Mindfulness is not forgetting the object, dhyana does not scatter the mind to other places, and wisdom is able to completely distinguish the Dharma, thus, the five faculties lead to the Dharma of liberation. Fifth, in two parts, it concludes with the way of combining the essence, the path of application, and power and strength. First, the unfavorable side is shown by hardness and so on. The respective unfavorable sides of these five, faith and so on, are disbelief, laziness, and forgetfulness.
