It should be known that this is done for the sake of purifying the mind. Fourth, the nature of practice has four aspects: the practice of dividing according to intention is the practice of intention; the practice of actually entering through application is the practice of entering; the practice of completing the entry is the practice of accumulation; and the practice of definitive arising upon completion. First, not being attached to one's own possessions and giving them to others is generosity; engaging and disengaging in accordance with what should be taken and abandoned, without transgressing this conduct, is discipline; enduring difficult tasks with an unwavering mind is patience. Engaging diligently in virtuous activities with joy is diligence; focusing the mind on the object of focus is meditation; thoroughly distinguishing phenomena is wisdom, all of which are for abandoning miserliness and other opposing factors. Taking non-conceptual wisdom as a companion, fulfilling all the wishes of sentient beings through this method, and ripening sentient beings through this means is the Great Vehicle path. This vast practice, such as the practice of intention of generosity and so on, summarizes these individual generosity and other perfections into six types and practices them. The intention is vast, solely for the benefit of others, this practice of intention, as stated in the sutras, is divided into six groups of six. In short, the great Bodhisattva practices the perfection of generosity in this way, which is to fully grasp all six perfections, and is therefore called donning the great armor. So it is said. Even each perfection is practiced with the six perfections, and through the armor of intention, it becomes an immeasurable armor that pervades all directions, totaling thirty-six types. Even giving a small amount of generosity, being free from self-interest, inferior paths, attention, and clinging to characteristics, etc., its benefits are as immeasurable as the space of the ten directions. From their respective positions of generosity and so on, dedicating the roots of virtue to sentient beings is generosity; abandoning the mind of Hearers and Solitary Realizers is discipline; enduring suffering such as abuse is patience; aspiring to the virtuous Dharma of the Great Vehicle is diligence; focusing the mind on omniscience is meditation; dedicating in a way that does not conceptualize the three spheres is wisdom, which should be understood through these six. Second, entering practice. The places where this armor enters are the eight paths, and there is one result, totaling nine. Because the mind is distracted by desires, it cannot obtain any qualities, therefore, one must remain steadfast on the object of focus.

In order to practice, one enters and emerges from the samadhi of tranquility or the four dhyanas and four formless absorptions, which are the basis of the path, and also cultivates the perfection of the six paramitas. Having stabilized the mind in this way, by studying the two accumulations, one enters the six paramitas such as generosity, which are the means to attain self-benefit realization, with the purity of the three spheres. One enters the path of seeing and meditation, which is the means to attain abandonment. And in order to accomplish the benefit of others, one enters the four immeasurables such as love. Since that attachment to entering the benefit of others is manifest clinging, one accomplishes the benefit of others. In vipashyana and samatha, one enters into the fact that all dharmas are endowed with no object of focus. On the Mahayana path, in the post-meditation period, one enters like an illusionary person with the complete purity of the three spheres. For the sake of whatever purpose the root of virtue is transformed, one enters for the sake of the three great purposes, and one enters the extraordinary six superknowledges of the power of quickly perfecting the accumulations. The result is the all-knowing nature of knowing all aspects of knowable things, and the practice of entering with focus on that is to be known as traversing and ascending the Mahayana, so these nine places are the places of entering the Mahayana. Incidentally, the eight, the four dhyanas and the four formless absorptions, are the cultivation of the samapatti of each of the seven mental engagements. The lower and lower grounds such as the desire realm have many faults and are coarse, and the higher and higher grounds such as the first dhyana are the opposite of that, with the mental engagement of thoroughly understanding the characteristics with the wisdom of hearing and thinking. 1. The mental engagement that arises from the wisdom born of meditation, from the aspiration that arises from cultivating dhyana. 2. The mental engagement that arises from extreme solitude, such as abandoning manifest afflictions of desire. 3. The mental engagement of gathering joy, such as abandoning intermediate afflictions of desire. 4. The mental engagement of examining in order to investigate whether afflictions arise or not. 5. The mental engagement of applying the limit of practice, such as abandoning the smallest of small afflictions of desire. 6. The mental engagement of experiencing the result of all the paths cultivated, the result of the limit of practice. 7. With those seven, one cultivates from the first dhyana up to the peak of existence. The first two mental engagements are the path of joining of that own path. Extreme solitude, gathering joy, and the three limits of practice are the uninterrupted path, and examination is the special path. The mental engagement of the result of practice is the path of liberation.
