Grasping onto this gives rise to thoughts of attachment and aversion. 8. Virtuous actions with outflows temporarily bring about higher realms, but that itself is also a cause of suffering, so suffering arises through pure nirvana. 9. In this way, due to clinging to the idea that all afflictions should be abandoned or discarded, there are nine kinds of apprehended conceptualizations that grasp onto that. The apprehended conceptualizations on the side of purification and liberation are the aggregates of stainless essence. 1. The condition is the category or gateway of purification and liberation, which is the twelve sources. 2. The cause of purification and liberation is the seed lineage, as stated in the sutras, where four lineages are established from the eighteen elements. 3. The manner of arising of purification and liberation is the arising and ceasing of dependent origination. 4. Conceptualizing the meaning of birth. How many and how are these four? The basis of purification and liberation is the eighteen emptinesses free from elaboration. 5. The path of purification and liberation, or conduct, is the six perfections. 6. The special path of purification and liberation is the path of seeing, as taught in the sutras by the factors of enlightenment. 7. What is taught by meditative absorption, clairvoyance, etc., is the path of meditation. 8. The result of purification and liberation is the path of no more learning, taught by the ten powers, etc., that is, 9. Clinging to the idea that purification and liberation should be taken up, there are nine apprehended conceptualizations that grasp onto that. The second is the apprehending conceptualization, which is the conceptualization that apprehends the self of the individual as substantially existent, and as the enjoyer based on what is imputed. It is also considered to be of two types. Among them, from the way of clinging to the nature of having an independent self, etc., as the way of making it the object of clinging, and from the basis of imputation of all pure dharmas such as aggregates, based on the difference of what is imputed, as mentioned earlier, there are nine subdivisions each. Regarding the substantially existent individual, in short, as indicated by the meaning of the nine sutra passages such as "I am not seen," "Form is not seen," "Eye is not seen," etc., in the sutras, the general clinging to an independent self that does not depend on others, 1. Clinging to the self as the unparalleled one from the aggregates. 2. Clinging to the self as the beginning of consciousness, or as the cause of the twelve sources and eighteen elements. 3. Clinging to the self as the seer to the knower. 4. Clinging to the self as the basis of all afflictions in samsara. 5. Clinging to the self as the basis of detachment from desire from the lower grounds of the form realm through worldly paths and meditative absorption. 6. Clinging to the self as the nature of directly realizing the characteristics of the four truths.

To hold the basis of the path of seeing as self, seventh, the basis of the undefiled path of meditation which is the essence of self-nature liberation and ultimate abiding, eighth, to hold the basis of the path of no more learning as self-sovereignty, this is the ninth. 9. On imputation-clinging. In short, as the nine sutra passages stated in the "Sutra of the Questions of Sagacious King": "The form that benefits beings is also other, illusion is also other," etc. To cling to imputing a person on the five aggregates, first, on the twelve sense bases such as the eye, second, the eighteen realms, these three are the basis of imputation for all beings in general. Third, on the twelve links of dependent origination is the basis of imputation for ordinary beings. Fourth, the basis of imputation for only noble ones, the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment. Fifth, the basis of imputation for the three grades of noble learners, lower, middle, and upper, is the path of seeing. Sixth, the path of meditation. Seventh, the special path. Eighth, the basis of imputation for noble Arhats, to cling to imputing Arhats on the path of no more learning, this is the ninth. 9. Thus, clinging to these thirty-six kinds of conceptual thoughts of abandoning, adopting, negating, and establishing as truly established will also revert when certainty arises in the subsequent attainment. Merely clinging to imputation, clinging to characteristics, will revert due to the power of meditative equipoise. Therefore, the realization of the path of accumulation causes those to-be-abandoned to become manifest and diminished. Third, the one who holds completely is: the arising of the path of joining, which is specially marked by the conceptual thought of Dharma that possesses the three, object, aspect, and cause, depends on the one who holds completely. The spiritual friend who holds completely, possessing three characteristics, is the characteristic of skillful means, generating fear towards the profound emptiness of the Prajnaparamita which is not a place of fear, as an antidote, the fearlessness of not establishing the minds of disciples on emptiness, constantly as an antidote to fear is non-fear, and as an antidote to the complete certainty of fear itself is complete non-fear, and so on. The skillful means of acting in this way and the characteristic of teaching the Dharma are: according to the thoughts of the disciples, with all phenomena being without self-nature, etc., to show the six perfections, and the generation of bodhicitta, dedication, etc., in one's own continuum. The characteristic of abandoning adverse conditions: the evil friend who causes one to abandon the Great Vehicle, which is contrary to wisdom, and the adverse conditions of the six perfections such as miserliness, and abandoning inferior path mental activities, etc., in various ways, is the external holder of the Bodhisattva's path of joining.
