If everything is an obstacle, why are the five taught? Because desire and anger, agitation and regret, and lethargy and sleep, these three sequentially harm the aggregates of discipline, concentration, and wisdom. If there is no concentration and wisdom, doubt will doubt concentration, wisdom, and the truths, therefore it is determined as five. Other teachers say that because they obstruct the preliminary, actual, and subsequent practices of concentration, the number of five obstacles is definite. Second, regarding how to abandon what should be abandoned, there are two: how to abandon afflictions, and the fruit of such abandonment—complete knowledge. First, there are two: a general explanation of abandoning through the paths of seeing and meditation, and two that arise from this. First, there are two: the way of abandoning through the path of seeing and the path of meditation. The first is that among the eighty-eight that are abandoned by the path of seeing, the view of the suffering truth abandoned by the path of seeing, which takes desire as its object, the two coemergent pervasive views, namely the view of self and the extreme view, and the three non-coemergent pervasive afflictions of attachment, anger, and pride, and the view of the origin truth abandoned by the path of seeing, the non-coemergent pervasive afflictions of attachment, etc., are the same, totaling eight. In the two upper realms, excluding anger, there are nine of each suffering truth abandoned by the path of seeing, and six of each origin truth abandoned by the path of seeing, totaling thirty. The ignorance abandoned by the path of seeing of the cessation and path truths of the three realms, except for six, the wrong view and doubt that take the uncontaminated as their object, four and three respectively, totaling twelve, these fifty are because they wrongly engage with the four truths as their object. Just as the grasping of a person is reversed by the transference of consciousness, the path of seeing abandons by completely knowing the self-characteristics of the four truths as its object, because they are contradictory. The second is that nine of these take the upper realm as their object, namely the nine non-coemergent pervasive afflictions of desire realm abandoned by the path of seeing of suffering and origin. These are abandoned because the coemergent pervasive afflictions of the desire realm that have these as their object have been completely exhausted, because the object of the coemergent pervasive afflictions is the non-coemergent pervasive afflictions, and this is what is contemplated in the desire realm, while those of the upper realms are abandoned by completely knowing the object. If it is said that even if it is an object, it is not certain that it will be abandoned, then the non-coemergent pervasive afflictions that are produced before the object, the coemergent pervasive afflictions, are the object, because the suffering and origin truths, the forbearance of phenomena and the knowledge of phenomena, are the cause of the coemergent pervasive afflictions of the desire realm.

Having abandoned the followers, the fruits produced by them, the unequal share of the realm's pervasive travelers, are also abandoned. Because a fruit without a cause is impossible. The third is, focusing on the cessation and path of the three realms, the view to be abandoned. In wrong views, the desire realm of wrong conduct has four types of cessation views to be abandoned, and five path views to be abandoned, totaling nine. In the two upper realms, there are seven each, excluding anger, totaling twenty-three. By abandoning those that actually focus on the wrong conduct, cessation, path, and view to be abandoned without outflows, such as wrong views, the objects of those with objects, such as holding views as supreme, which focus on outflows, those wrong conduct with outflows in wrong views will also be abandoned. Because on the cessation and path, with the Dharma-tolerance wisdom and subsequent-tolerance wisdom, actually focusing on the object without outflows, such as wrong views, when abandoning after knowing the object, it is impossible for an object with an object without an object. The six ignorances of the cessation and path views to be abandoned of the three realms are: actually focusing on the wrong conduct without outflows, and focusing on the wrong conduct with outflows in wrong views, in order. Abandoning by fully understanding the object and abandoning the object. Similarly, the objects to be abandoned of the upper realms are abandoned simultaneously, and the truths are seen simultaneously. Therefore, the unequal share of the realm's pervasive travelers of the form realm is also abandoned by knowing the object. The equal share of the pervasive travelers of the nine pervasive travelers of the desire realm mentioned earlier is also abandoned by knowing the object. Thus, everything is rooted in abandoning by fully understanding the object. The unequal share of the pervasive travelers of the desire realm is also abandoned by knowing the object truth through the path, thereby abandoning the equal share and pervasive travelers of the object, and those that focus on the cessation and path views to be abandoned with outflows of the three realms are also abandoned by the power of abandoning those that focus on the object without outflows by knowing the cessation and path. Merely knowing those respective objects cannot abandon them. Because the object of the unequal share of the realm's pervasive travelers is the two upper realms. And the two upper realms are known by the subsequent-tolerance wisdom on suffering and origin, therefore, the unequal share of the pervasive travelers has already been abandoned by the way of abandoning the object with the Dharma-tolerance wisdom on the suffering and origin of the desire realm. Similarly, those that focus on the cessation and path views to be abandoned with outflows focus on.
