The seven (anusayas) and six stains exist in the desire realm and are unwholesome. The three of sloth, excitement, and sleep, sleep has wholesome aspects, but here it is in the context of pervasive afflictions, so because it is an affliction, it is unwholesome, and is both defiled and neutral. All the near afflictions above the desire realm are only defiled and neutral. Third, it is asked, in which realm and ground do these near afflictions exist and how many are there? In the desire realm and also in the first dhyana, there is deceit and deception. As it says in the Vinaya Pitaka, the noble Ashvajit asked Brahma where these four great elements would completely cease, and Brahma, not knowing, said, "I am Brahma, I am Great Brahma, I am the powerful one, I am the creator, I am the transformer, I am the giver, I am the source, I am the intermediary of all things," deceiving the noble Ashvajit with deceitful words. Later, Ashvajit took Brahma by the hand and asked the Buddha if he could ask him, and the Buddha said that they would temporarily cease in the formless realm and ultimately cease in nirvana. Because it is the ground of afflictions, the three of sloth, excitement, and torpor are present in all three realms. Other than these three and the two of deceit and deception, the other eleven are born only from the desire realm. Fourth, among the root and near afflictions, all that are abandoned by seeing and those that are not abandoned by seeing but are abandoned by cultivation, including sleep and pride, are the object of consciousness, because they are conceptual and unclear, so they do not arise in the object of other consciousnesses other than consciousness. Similarly, the eleven near afflictions, the latter five pervasive ones and the six stains, although they are abandoned by cultivation, are only the object of consciousness because they are conceptual. Other than these, the two uncertain attachments and aversions that are abandoned by cultivation among the afflictions and near afflictions, the two unwholesome grounds, and the six grounds of great afflictions are all dependent on the six consciousnesses. Fifth, there are two ways in which root afflictions and near afflictions arise together. First, pleasant feeling and mental pleasure arise together with desire, because they enter in the form of joy. That is, bodily pleasure and desire arise together.

English
It arises in the sphere of the five consciousnesses. Hatred enters in the form of sorrow, which is the opposite of the feeling of attachment. Moreover, it arises successively in the sphere of the five senses and the mind consciousness, accompanied by suffering and displeasure. The five kinds of ignorance to be abandoned, as well as the ignorance mixed or unmixed with them, correspond to all feelings, and correspond to all consciousnesses and all afflictions. To perversely believe that there are no Four Noble Truths, and to think that committing sins and doing good deeds will not produce results in sequence, is therefore accompanied by both pleasant and unpleasant suffering. When doubt arises about the object to be pursued, it is because of displeasure, so what corresponds to displeasure is doubt. The other four afflictive views and pride, these five correspond to pleasure, because they are only the sphere of consciousness, and they enter in a joyful manner. The annihilationist view is also of a joyful nature. These are feelings that arise from desire and are controlled by afflictions, because there is no anger, displeasure, or suffering in the higher realms, and also, happiness is not present in the fourth dhyana. Equanimity corresponds to all these afflictions, and it is said that when these afflictions are cut off, one must abide in equanimity in order to cut them off. Just as feelings and afflictions exist in their own realms in the higher form and formless realms, so should their respective correspondences be understood as above. Secondly, the near afflictions of regret, jealousy, anger, as well as harm, resentment, and indignation, these six correspond to displeasure, because they are the sphere of consciousness and are feelings that enter in a sorrowful manner. Stinginess is only the sphere of consciousness, and it arises from the cause of attachment, so contrary to that, it corresponds to pleasure. Deceit, pretense, concealment, and sleep, etc., change successively into pleasure and displeasure according to the success or failure of the deceitful and pretentious actions, concealment is also the same as that, while sleep is not contrary to anything, and everything is only the sphere of consciousness, therefore all three correspond to both pleasure and displeasure. Because it enters in a joyful manner and is the sphere of consciousness, the happiness of the third dhyana, as well as the pleasure below the second dhyana, and arrogance, etc.

Possessing equanimity. Since it is absent beyond the fourth level, it is accordingly associated solely with equanimity. Just as ignorance can be associated with any of the afflictions and secondary afflictions, equanimity can pervade all levels, consciousness, afflictions, and secondary afflictions, and can be associated with all. It is said that equanimity, which possesses all, is obscured by the anger of all combinations. Does this mean that there is no fault in making equanimity the basis? One might think so. Apart from all entanglements, the other four, shamelessness, lack of embarrassment, agitation, and drowsiness, can potentially be associated with the five feelings, since the first two are of the unwholesome level, and the latter two are of the great affliction level. These also arise in the retinue of all six consciousnesses, since all six can have unwholesome and afflictive qualities. Secondly, the five incidental obscurations are: as stated in the sutras, desire for desire, malice, drowsiness, sleep, agitation, regret, and doubt are the five obscurations. Desire, malice, sleep, and regret are associated with desire, but agitation, drowsiness, and doubt are present in all three realms. Are these three then the objects? No, because they obscure meditation, liberation, concentration, and absorption. Therefore, only the desire realm has these five obscurations. The sutras state that these five are the aggregates of unwholesomeness. Why are drowsiness and sleep, and agitation and regret, which are different mental factors, described as one obscuration? Drowsiness and sleep are not food, and both are eliminated by the single thought of perceiving the antidote of the opposing side. There are four foods that increase them: bewilderment, displeasure, fabrication, and the lack of proper food temperature, along with discouragement, these five increase both of them. The function of both is to discourage or draw the mind inward, and agitation and regret are similar. Calm abiding is the opposing side, the antidote to both. There are four foods: thoughts of relatives, thoughts of places, thoughts of immortality, and remembering past laughter and enjoyment. The function of both is to make the mind unpacified. Therefore, although there are two each of sleep, drowsiness, etc., they are established as one obscuration. Root and near afflictions.
