Because of being close, they are called near afflictions. Those are the secondary afflictions and defilements, and those arising from subtle things, such as unhappiness and laziness, as well as discouragement and delusion, and the inability to digest the heat of food, and various different thoughts, etc., twenty-four in all, which should be understood from the Garland of Gems and the Compendium of Categories. Secondly, there are three parts: the explanation of pervasive entanglements, the explanation of the six stains, and the explanation of the distinctions between the two in common. First, there are two parts: the entity and the way in which it is generated by which root affliction. First, shamelessness and lack of shame, as well as jealousy and stinginess, and excitement and unwholesome regret, as well as lethargy and unwholesome sleep, are eight in number. These are the eight aspects of pervasive entanglement. The Vaibhashikas add anger and concealment to these, making ten. The nature of these has already been explained. These entangle beings in the prison of existence, or because of these, evil behaviors arise, so they are pervasive entanglements. Secondly, by which root affliction are they generated? Desire generates shamelessness, excitement, and stinginess, three in number. In order, it is because one is attached to one's own dharma and therefore does not respect others; because one is attached to desirable qualities, the mind is distracted; and because one is attached to possessions, one clings tightly to them. Concealment, some believe is generated by desire, others believe it is generated by ignorance, and others believe it is generated by both. Those who know that a fault has occurred generate it from desire, and those who do not know that it has occurred generate it from ignorance, so they argue inconsistently. However, it is reasonable to say that concealment arises from attachment because one fears the loss of gain, respect, etc. Ignorance generates lethargy, sleep, and lack of shame, three in number. In order, it is because there is no lethargy or sleep to clearly engage the object, and because one does not know that the result of sin is suffering, one is not afraid of sin. From doubt arises unwholesome regret, because one doubts whether the result of virtue is happiness, so one regrets having done good. Anger and jealousy arise from the cause of anger, because from hatred arises the mind of pervasive torment, and because one's mind is disturbed by the perfections of others and one cannot bear it. Secondly, there are also two parts: the entity and the indication of which root affliction it arises from. First, furthermore, the sutras also speak of the six stains of affliction, namely illusion and deceit, and

Jealousy, as well as anger, resentment, and vexation. Their nature has been explained. Second, deceit and pride arise from desire, because of the fear of the decline of gain, etc., and because of the pleasure of being attached to one's own dharma. Resentment and vexation arise from hatred, because of its power, resentment and harm to sentient beings arise. Anger arises from holding views as supreme, because of clinging to one's own views and being angry with others. Deception is initiated by views pervading everything. The sutra says, what is deceit? It is the view of the wicked. Therefore, those who have wrong views do not abandon evil and are deceitful in their minds. Third, divided into two: the main topic and the incidental discussion of the five obscurations. First, divided into five: examining whether to abandon by the path of seeing or the path of cultivation; examining which non-virtue is the nature of obscuration; examining in which realm it exists; examining, including gross and subtle, which root consciousness and consciousness it relies on; examining which feeling it is associated with. First, among the ten secondary afflictions, shamelessness and lack of shame, as well as lethargy and sleep, and agitation, are of two kinds: those that are abandoned by seeing and those that are associated with seeing, those that are abandoned by cultivation and those that are associated with cultivation. Moreover, shamelessness and lack of shame are associated with all non-virtues, lethargy and agitation can be associated with all afflictions, and sleep is the place of the mind, so it is also possible to be associated with everything that is practiced in the desire realm. The five others, jealousy, stinginess, regret, anger, and concealment, are to be abandoned by cultivation, because they are not directly or indirectly inverted to the truth. They are also independent of non-virtue, because they are only associated with the ignorance that is abandoned by cultivation. If it is said that what is only associated with ignorance is independent, what is the reason for this? Because when they arise, they themselves are the main ones, and do not depend on greed or others, and although they are only associated with ignorance, ignorance is foolish, so it is not the cause of arising, as the Kadampa school says. Those non-virtues have power themselves, and are not controlled by greed, etc., like ignorance and so on. Similarly, the six stains are also to be abandoned by cultivation and are independent. Second, secondary affliction, shamelessness.
