Moreover, it not only summarizes the root, but ultimately it is rooted in the view of destruction. The supreme clinging to views is rooted in hypocrisy because it clings to what one believes can purify as supreme. Wrong views are rooted in doubt, hence the teaching of the three. The teacher said: The view of destruction, with doubt about self, does not want to go to liberation; even if one goes, one goes astray due to hypocrisy; and the more doubt one has about the path, the more obstacles hinder one from going to liberation, therefore, it is taught that those who have entered the stream only abandon the three bonds. Third, again, the sutra says: "By abandoning the five afflictions that are in accordance with the higher realms, one becomes a noble Arhat." What is said is: the two desires born from the form and formless realms, as well as agitation, pride, and universal ignorance. Why? Because without abandoning these, one cannot transcend the higher realms, and because they are to be abandoned through meditation. Because they are the cause of not abandoning the higher realms, these three are each counted as one; because they are the cause of obtaining the higher realms, the two desires are counted separately as two. Anger, although to be abandoned through meditation, does not exist in the higher realms. Second, again, the sutra says: "Three bonds, namely, the bonds of all desire, all hatred, and all ignorance." What is said is that due to the influence of feelings such as pleasure, attachment and so on arise, and therefore, because they bind to samsara, they are said to be three bonds. Because from the three feelings, the three poisons increase through the means of object and association. In the Compendium, it is said that the three poisons bind to change, suffering, and the aggregate of formations in sequence, therefore they are called bonds. That is to say, for the happiness and suffering of one's own continuum, they increase through both the means of object and association; for the continuum of others, they increase through the means of object. Although equanimity also increases both attachment and hatred, because ignorance is not clearly consistent with the two, it increases especially, as Gangpel explains. Third, the near afflictions. There are two types: general explanation and specific explanation. First, the aggregate of formations that arises from a mind with afflictions other than the six root afflictions is also called a near affliction. For these, one cannot call them root afflictions or afflictions without the near, because they are not the root. These are afflictions
