It is not. If actually connected to and accepting samsara, then other afflictions are not like that. Therefore, the connection and acceptance of desire is attachment to desire. Similarly, the connection of existence is attachment to the higher realms, and attachment to views, etc., should be understood as stated in the sutras. The sutra says: What is the connection of desire? From "attachment arises to all desires," to "desire, aspiration for desire, craving for desire, great faith in desire, fainting from desire, clinging to desire, delight in desire, infatuation with desire, and especially attachment to desire, whatever there is, by which this mind is completely bound and abides, this is the connection of desire." And again, what is the connection of views? From "attachment arises to these views," etc., up to "abiding in this, this is the connection of views." What is close grasping? It is the attachment of aspiration for this. Fourth, regarding the etymology. Generally, there are two types of etymology: subtle and expansive, and specific etymologies for outflows, etc. First, because these afflictions are not form but are of the nature of mental factors, they are difficult to understand and are therefore subtle. Because they are related to seeds or attainment and subsequent connection, they are incomprehensible and are subtle. They increase through the two aspects of having the same object and appearance, and without effort, they repeatedly manifest in the continuum even when suppressed, and because they constantly follow, they also increase. Therefore, they are called subtle and expansive. Second, if one is not separated from attachment to the three realms, then these afflictions cause beings to remain in samsara, and from the peak of existence to the Avici hell, they flow out through the doors of the six sense sources, and like a stream, they carry beings to other realms, destinies, and birthplaces in the ocean of samsara, connecting and clinging consciousness to samsara or objects, and closely grasping consciousness in the place of samsara. In order, they are outflows, and streams, connections, close grasping, etc., these are the etymologies. The teacher said: Because the stream of consciousness flows and changes towards objects, it is an outflow. Like a river, it is carried away by strong afflictions, or connected to various sufferings such as birth.

Because of repeatedly combining, it combines, and because of closely accepting desires, etc., it closely accepts desire, thus it is explained. Second, regarding the categories mentioned in the treatises, there are two types: teaching and explanation. First, for those subtle latent tendencies, because of completely combining, etc., with the distinctions of bondage, subtle latent tendencies, near afflictions, and universal entanglements, it is again explained in five ways from the Sutras and Abhidharma. Second, there are three: conducive binding, binding, and near affliction. First, there are three explanations of the nine conducive bindings: the five corresponding to the lower realms, and the five corresponding to the higher realms. First, those subtle latent tendencies have already been explained, and the others will be explained in order. First, there are nine conducive bindings: subsequent attachment, anger, pride, ignorance, views, clinging, doubt, jealousy, and miserliness. It is said that they are conducive bindings because they bind to objects and births, or to suffering. Among them, the first six, such as attachment, excluding anger, belong to all three realms, while the last two and anger belong only to the desire realm. Therefore, in the Madhyāntavibhāga it says: "Conducive bindings are all obscurations. Attachment brings weariness and equanimity, and so does anger. The remaining seven are seen by the path of seeing. Pride is the view of the aggregates, and ignorance is its basis. Views are abandoned by the path of cessation, clinging is doubt about the path and the Three Jewels. Gain brings jealousy and respect, and possessions bring miserliness and complete understanding of illness." As it is said in the scriptures, they are all obscurations. Among them, the first three views are conducive bindings of views, and the last two are conducive bindings of clinging. Why are they combined into one? Because the first three have eighteen substances, and similarly, the last two combined also have eighteen substances, so it is also due to the relationship of substances. The first two views are the two abandoned by seeing the truth of suffering in the desire realm, and the two above are also two, making six. Wrong views in the three realms, the four abandoned by seeing the four truths are four each, totaling twelve, which added together make eighteen. The fifth view in the three realms, the two abandoned by seeing the truth of suffering and the path are two each, making six. The fourth, in the three realms, the twelve abandoned by seeing the four truths are added, also making eighteen. It is said that these two are the same. This is also divided from the twelve categories of what is abandoned by seeing. However, establishing separately
