Therefore, the path of meditation is with and without outflows, so it is not subtle increase. Therefore, the eleven pervasive ones of the first two truths and the four to be abandoned by meditation, these fifteen subtle increases will increase. Even if included by the continuum, it is not afflictive. For all that is not included by the continuum, only the four to be abandoned by meditation increase, etc., should be understood. Second, regarding the analysis of how subtle increases are accompanied: If a mind is accompanied by a subtle increase, does that subtle increase increase in that mind? The answer is: Some do increase, namely those that are concordant with that mind, and the object is not abandoned, and are also unabandoned subtle increases. Some do not increase, namely those that are concordant with that mind, but are abandoned subtle increases. Thus it is said. Mind is a representation, namely concordant with outflows and not concordant, two types. First, an afflictive mind is accompanied by subtle increases, in which there are two aspects: increasing and not increasing. First, the afflictive mind of an ordinary being is both increased and accompanied by both concordant afflictions such as attachment and the object. For a noble one, even if the concordant is abandoned, there is still increase and accompaniment by the object, as it is said: Although the suffering to be abandoned by seeing is abandoned, it is still accompanied by the remaining pervasive ones. And so on, as explained. Second, the past afflictive mind of an Arhat that dwells together with afflictions, and the future afflictive mind of the nature of not arising that dwells together with afflictions, these are accompanied but do not increase. Although they do not increase, they are still established as accompanied by subtle increases, because they increased in the past when they were not abandoned. This is an erroneous adherence to the tenet of the three times being substantially existent. There are two ways in which subtle increases are accompanied in the mind: concordance and object. Concordance is the afflictive mind, and these cannot increase on their own foreheads. Non-afflictive minds are accompanied by subtle increases that increase by the object. Those that do not increase are not accompanied by subtle increases. Concordance, although it does not increase, is still accompanied by subtle increases. Thus it is said. That which is accompanied by subtle increases is with outflows, and there are two ways in which it is accompanied: the concordance of afflictions, and the subtle increases that increase by the object. The non-afflictive mind of one's own realm, namely virtuous with outflows and unobscured neutral, all increase by the object.
