Similarly, like the novice monk and the novice nun parents are similar, like the layperson parents are similar. Here, it refers to the nature of substance. The eight precepts are not explained in two ways, is it because the time is short? From the Compendium of Topics, it is also said to arise in food and so on. Those who are protected have different amounts, but the substance of the vows is not different, so it is only a change of name, the name is only a transformation. Because the previous vows are not abandoned, and new vows cannot be obtained. Second, the incidental examination of whether the substance of the vows is one or different. The three substances of vows such as layperson, etc., in the continuum of one person, the substances are different, because the causes of obtaining and abandoning are not the same. If it is said that one person is all three, such as layperson, etc., is this contradictory? Even though the four substances are different in the continuum, the nature of these vows is not contradictory, because there is no such thing as one preventing the other from being protected, so they can each be possessed in the continuum. The five bases for monks are abandoning three each, singing and dancing, etc., are abandoning two, and the other abandonments are each one. However, from the difference in the basic intention, monks abandon killing more, novice nuns abandon moderately, and laypersons abandon less. If it is said that monks will become novice nuns, etc.? Because the word monk is the main one. In reality, the minds of abandoning are not one but many, the times are not the same, and without the previous word, receiving full ordination, and those who are aging, it is because of the difference in mind, by the power of commitment, that they are obtained and abandoned. Because the lower is included in the upper, it is called possessing three vows. Second, the respective nature is, here it is established as a special intention and self-attainment, abandoning the five, eight, ten, and all things such as killing, etc., is to be understood in this way sequentially from the commitment, that is, abandoning the five things of killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and alcohol, from the commitment to abandon forever, one becomes a layperson, and in order to abide in the state of a layperson, it is also explained as determining oneself. On top of those five, adding the sounds of singing, dancing, and music, and garlands, incense, ornaments, and colors, that is, counting singing and garlands as one of the six, the two of high and large beds as seven, and untimely food as eight, promising to abandon these eight for one day and one night, is the eight precepts. Among those eight, singing and garlands, etc.

Divided into two parts, the commitment to abstain from acquiring gold and silver for as long as one lives is for the purpose of abiding in the state of a novice monk, and the complete commitment to abandon all actions of body and speech that should be abandoned is that of a fully ordained monk. The actions to be abandoned, summarized as vows, are the four root downfalls, the thirteen remainders, the thirty expiations involving forfeiture, the ninety simple expiations, the four confessions, and the one hundred and twelve misdeeds, totaling two hundred and fifty-three. The third part is a detailed explanation of the general name and the name of the first moment. First, that which cools the suffering of oneself and others' body and mind is discipline, that which is praised by the wise is good conduct, that which is the nature of action is karma, and that which restrains misdeeds is restraint; these are all synonyms. Similarly, synonyms for discipline can also be root, ornament, anointment, and incense. Second, the first form of obtaining individual liberation, whether cognitive or non-cognitive, is called the vow of individual liberation, and also the path of action. The first is the first liberation from sin, and it is the actual path where the action of restraint arises. From the second moment onwards, it has no meaning, because if "Prātimokṣa" (Tibetan: པྲ་ཏི་མོཀྵ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: प्रातिमोक्ष, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: prātimokṣa, Chinese literal meaning: individual liberation) is the first liberation, then it is already liberated, and it is the end of the path of action. The fourth part is divided into two: the main topic and the incidental. First, who possesses these vows? Those who possess individual liberation vows are the eight classes of monks, etc. Do outsiders not have individual liberation vows? They may have vows in general, but they do not have individual liberation vows because they are tainted by wrong views, etc., and they perceive the distinctions of existence as liberation, so they do not permanently liberate from sin. Second, incidentally, two other vows. Explaining who possesses them, and explaining the meaning of other vows mentioned as appropriate. First, the vows born from meditative concentration are possessed by those who possess the preparatory stage and the actual stage of meditative concentration. The undefiled vows are possessed by noble beings, both learners and non-learners. Second, what are the vows that follow the mind, and the common basis of meditative concentration and abandonment vows, and the explanation of the vows of mind and senses, in three points. First, the latter two, the meditative concentration and undefiled vows, both follow the mind, i.e., meditative equipoise.
