If, after killing, one wrongly believes that there is no karmic result, and does not generate even a little regret, then by this alone, this person completely severs all the roots of virtue of the three realms. This is because that continuum is not a vessel for that, so it is intended to prolong the time to obtain the virtues of the three realms. Second, the cause of severance is to slander the cause, saying that there is no good or bad conduct; to slander the result, saying that there is no result of those, so it is severed. Some say that only by focusing on the suffering of the contaminated and the realm of equal share can it be severed, but not by focusing on the uncontaminated path of cessation and the realm of unequal share. Therefore, it is not because of slandering the noble ones, etc. The Vaibhashikas say that the wrong view of focusing on the contaminated and uncontaminated realms of equal and unequal share can sever all. I wonder if this "all" needs to be fully possessed. Third, it is indicated by "gradually." Some say that nine roots of virtue are severed all at once, just as when one sees the truth, one abandons the great category of what is to be abandoned by seeing, etc., all at once. Some say that, like what is to be abandoned by meditation, the nine roots of virtue are gradually abandoned by the nine great and small. If that is the case, then the sutra says, "The subtle one is the last to be abandoned of all when severing the roots of virtue, because without it, it is counted among the ranks of severing the roots of virtue." This saying can be well explained. Fourth, only in the human realm. As a basis, it is men and women who can sever it. Evil destinies are because the thoughts of good and evil are not stable, so the result is not as manifest as in the heavens, and the sound is not pleasant, so there is no such evil thought. Some say that it is not necessarily only in Jambudvipa (Earth) that it can be severed, because it is said that the same is true in the eastern and western continents with the eight freedoms and endowments. It is not because of agitated thoughts that one engages in lust, but because evil thoughts are firm, and one is a concealer of sins, that one practices wrong views. Eating and drinking, etc., are not because of unstable thoughts. Fifth, the nature of severance is that one does not possess the attainment of virtue, and what has not been attained arises. Sixth, the boundary is: doubt arises about cause and effect, or by the correct view that believes in cause and effect. Those who commit the five heinous crimes and sever the roots of virtue do not connect the continuum in this life, because the sutra says that those who commit the five heinous crimes do not have the qualification to connect the continuum only by the present dharma, but are born in hell, or connect the continuum when they transmigrate from there. For that

Cutting off by the power of shared causes is at the junction of death. Cutting off by the power of another's sound is at birth. Likewise, cutting off by the power of one's own conceptualization and by the power of hearing from others is also the same. Furthermore, cutting off roots of virtue due to the decline of thought is in this life, and cutting off the connection (to the next life) is when both thought and action decline. Here, thought is the manifestation of wrong view, and action is the commission of the five heinous crimes. Similarly, it should be understood that wrong view and the five heinous crimes also cause the decline of views and ethics, just as the previous decline due to one's own and others' powers. Therefore, here, there are four possibilities for cutting off roots of virtue and being determined as evil: first, the six teachers, such as Pūraṇa Kassapa; second, Ajātasattu; third, Devadatta; and fourth, others. The third is how many actions occur simultaneously: non-virtuous actions occur simultaneously with one to eight minds, but not with nine or ten minds. Among these, occurring simultaneously with one means that, apart from killing, one mind such as greed manifests, or the mind is virtuous or neutral, and any form other than sexual misconduct is performed. Two occur simultaneously when killing, etc., with malice. Three occur simultaneously when, with malice, one robs and kills other beings at the same time, or when killing occurs with manifest greed, and taking what is not given is entrusted to another. Four occur simultaneously when, with any of malice or greed, one speaks falsely or harshly with a discriminating mind, or when, with any of greed, one entrusts three of the acts of killing, etc., to another. Similarly, it should also be understood that five, six, and seven occur simultaneously. Eight occur when any of one's own greed, etc., manifests, and one entrusts the six actions of body and speech to another, and one commits sexual misconduct oneself, so that all are completed simultaneously. If the mind is not afflicted, and one completes it by entrusting any of the six forms to another, it is one; killing with malice, or taking what is not given with greed, or sexual misconduct, or speaking frivolous words, it is two; if one commits sexual misconduct oneself with any of the three of mind, and completes it by entrusting six actions to another, then eight occur simultaneously. Two of the three of mind,
