Karma and existence, the arising of what was previously non-existent is birth, complete maturation is aging, and that destruction is death. All these events occur in an instant. Secondly, necessity, collection, differentiation, and the manner of continuous arising. Incidentally, among the five differences between dependent arising and arising as stated in the sutras, firstly, if the arising of sprouts etc. from external seeds is also dependent arising, then why is it specifically shown that sentient beings' ignorance etc. are called dependent arising? It is to prevent the mind from falsely attributing various kinds of ideas, such as 'I did not arise before,' 'whether or not the later end will arise,' and 'what am I like in the present intermediate state,' and to prevent the three kinds of delusion about the cause of that, which is ignorance of self. Secondly, if summarized into three, the afflictions are the three of ignorance, craving, and grasping. Karma is the two of action and existence. The support or basis of karma and afflictions is the seven of consciousness etc. The seven are the basis and also the result, or the seven bases are also karma and afflictions. In short, it is shown that they are mutually so. Therefore, if ignorance has a cause and old age and death have a result, it is not necessarily twelve branches. If not, the existence of self has a beginning and an end. If you say so, it will not be so, because the cause of ignorance is old age and death, and the result of old age and death is ignorance. Thirdly, the summary of the two groups of cause and effect of the previous and later is: for the two of the previous and later ends, ignorance and action are the cause of the previous end, and consciousness to feeling is the result of that. Craving, grasping, and existence are the cause of the later end, and birth and aging are the result of that. In the Compendium, it is said that from the aspect of the alaya consciousness holding imprints, it is summarized as karma, and three karmas are spoken of. Like there is no difference in the causal relationship between the previous and the later, what is the reason for summarizing the previous cause into two and the later result into two? That is summarized in that way, but like the present birth and the intermediate result have five results and three causes, there are also three for the previous cause and five for the later result, which can be known from inference. Like the previous cause and result, the intermediate cause and result should be known to be summarized. It should be known that it is a necessary distinction and summary, and it should be known that the meaning is the same. Old age and death are between feeling, therefore ignorance arises from there, and there is no interruption in between, there is a cause, and it is possible that there is no limit.

Now begins the narration. Fourth, if ignorance is the cause and old age and death are the result, then it is not necessarily the twelve links of dependent origination; if there is no cause and effect, then by nature there would be a beginning and an end. If one thinks this way, then the arising of afflictions is due to the afflictions of craving, and ignorance and grasping lead to action, that is, action and existence. From this, various bases arise, that is, from action arises consciousness, and from existence arises birth. From these bases, name and form, old age and death, etc., arise, that is, from consciousness arise name and form, etc., and from birth arise old age and death. From these bases, from feeling arises craving. Between feeling and old age and death is old age and death, and craving is ignorance, therefore from old age and death arises the affliction of ignorance, this uninterrupted situation is the limb of existence in cyclic existence, it is the law or way of cyclic existence, therefore by nature there is no beginning and end, it is definitely the twelve links of dependent origination, thus freeing from both faults. Because the cause of ignorance is old age and death, and the result of old age and death is also ignorance. Fifth, what are "dharmas that dependently arise" and "dharmas that have dependently arisen"? Although the scriptures say that both are synonyms for conditioned phenomena, here "arising" refers to those that are causes, because from this the result arises. "Arisen" is considered to be the results produced by them, because they arise from causes. Second, regarding the essence. Here is a discussion of what is relevant at the moment, and two other reasons why it is not necessary to discuss it here. First, regarding the four: ignorance, name, contact, and feeling. First, regarding ignorance. Establishing one's own view and refuting other views. First, the Sautrāntikas and others say that everything is not the five aggregates, because ignorance does not know the prior limit. Because they say that ignorance is only a mental factor, and action is only thought, etc. Nor is it the most important, because if it were, it would become merely explaining consciousness. The amount of large and small is also unreasonable, because in the past there was more ignorance, and now there is more craving, etc. Consciousness and name and form exist without difference in the desire and form realms. Therefore, this explanation is only a specific case of cause and effect, not the generality of conditioned dependent origination, because it does not include external dependent origination. Therefore, ignorance, etc., are understood according to the literal meaning, therefore if these are explained, it refers to continuous dependent origination.
