Furthermore, the sense-sources of smell, taste, and touch are the very nature of chunk-food. That is, it is cut into chunks by the nose, tongue, and body, and then swallowed by the throat. Chunk-food can be fine or medium. It is the food of the desire-realm gods and the people of the first age, because they eat by smelling, and because it is digested inside the limbs like sesame oil poured into sand, without a common cause. Alternatively, the food of small sentient beings such as infants and heat-and-moisture-born beings is fine, and other than that it is coarse. Bathing, anointing, massaging, etc., which maintain the body, are also food. So how is touch, which is present in shadows, the sun, etc., food? This is mostly the case, but some say that it is not. This shows that most of the three sense-sources are chunk-food, but it does not show that sun, shadows, etc., are mostly made into chunks. Second, if it is said that the sense-source of form, such as rice porridge, is also cut into chunks and swallowed, so it is chunk-food, then that is not chunk-food, because when it is swallowed, that sense-source does not benefit its own sense-faculty, the eye, or its basis, the four great elements, let alone others. If it is said that when one is afflicted by hunger, it is beneficial just to see food, is it not? That is because the touch that experiences mental pleasure by seeing it is taken as food, not form. If that were the case, then those who are detached from desire would be satisfied just by seeing food, but it is not beneficial for those who are liberated from the afflictions of desire, and even now, seeing food does not benefit those who have lost hope. Gangs pel said that the form aggregate is not chunk-food because it is not the object of the sense-faculty that apprehends after contact, like sound. What is beneficial is touch or mind becoming food. Other sense-faculties, etc., are not food. Second, there are two parts: the real and the showing that it exists in all realms. First, the Vaibhashikas say that only defiled touch, feeling, and consciousness are food, and the three undefiled touch, feeling, and consciousness are not food, because the meaning of food is to nourish existence, and they are the antidote to the exhaustion of existence. Second, these three exist in the three realms. Third, the sutra also says: Foods are what make sentient beings exist, live, and benefit those who seek existence. The "birth" that is said is birth, so who are those who seek existence? They are those who do not depend on the impure matter of parents, but are born by mind.

Furthermore, because it arises from mind for the sake of birth, and because it possesses the state of seeking previous or future existence, it is called 'seeker of existence'; because it feeds on subtle scents, it is called 'fragrance eater'; because it dwells between death and birth, it is called 'intermediate existence'; because it manifestly inclines towards birth, it is called 'manifestly accomplishing existence.' These are synonyms. Therefore, in the sutra, it says: 'Having abandoned the fetter of manifest accomplishment, but not having abandoned the fetter of birth,' etc., the first of the four possibilities is the non-returner. Among the latter two, the one free from attachment and the one who passes into nirvana by abandoning the intermediate state; the third is the arhat; the fourth is those not included above. Alternatively, the one who has arisen is the arhat, and the seeker of existence is the one who possesses existence. Second, the way it is food. For this life, the support or dwelling place of mind and mental factors, the meaning of the body with the senses increasing, is coarse food; the meaning of the mind and mental factors increasing by relying on it, is touch. The first two foods are like a mother nourishing the existence of this life. Projecting another existence is thought, and for the sake of accomplishing the future existence, it is consciousness. The two foods like a mother are in that order. Food nourishes this life and the future existence, which is also the main meaning, and coarse food and touch also indirectly project the future existence, from which arise afflictions, from which arise actions, etc. The sutra says: 'Bhikkhus, these four foods are disease and boils,' among which boils may be sores, which are the root of suffering, and are the cause of old age and death. The latter two also cause sentient beings to abide, such as thinking of roasted barley flour in an ash bag and not dying is thought, and if it is seized by consciousness, then the body and mental factors will also increase. Eggs, etc., if parents remember their children, they live, which is said to be similar to dependent origination, otherwise it would be the food of others. Alternatively, it is said that the egg itself remembers. The Definitive Summary states: The body, feeling, mind, mental factors increasing, or memory, etc., are definitely considered as the basis for entering. If counting the four possibilities of elements and food, then scorched potatoes, etc., are not beneficial in both eating and digesting, and the second is the three, touch, etc. Two are coarse food that increases with support, and two are not, sound and feeling, suffering and all that is associated with it. Similarly, for touch and food, there are four possibilities in order: touch is unpolluted, and the three foods are touch.
