Regarding earth-pervasion, its nature will be explained. Its function is to act as an assistant to afflictions and near-afflictions. Minor afflictive mental factors: Anger refers to mental agitation upon the manifestation of harm, and has the nature of creating disputes. Resentment refers to prolonging anger, serving as the basis for intolerance. Deceit refers to not admitting one's own faults, being deceitful in mind, and has the function of obstructing the attainment of correct teachings. Jealousy refers to intolerance of others' perfections, serving as the basis for mental unease. Vexation refers to being manifestly attached to evil. Among the five aggregates, what is vexation? It is the act of scolding with harsh words, which is considered to belong to the category of hatred. Its function is the fault of speech, the inability to abide in ease, and the increase of non-merit. Therefore, it is difficult for wise people to associate with those who possess these qualities. Thus it is said. Concealing refers to covering up and hiding faults, and its function is to be the basis of regret and displeasure. Stinginess refers to being attached to Dharma, wealth, and the possessions of the wise, being unwilling to give to others, and has the function of preventing resources from being depleted. Dissimulation refers to being attached to gain, respect, etc., pretending as if one possesses qualities, and is the basis of wrong livelihood. Conceit will be revealed, and its function is to be the basis of afflictions. Harmfulness refers to desiring sentient beings to suffer, and has the nature of creating disputes. These ten are the minor afflictive mental factors, which are associated only with the root affliction of ignorance, are only to be abandoned through meditation, and are associated only with the mind-consciousness to be abandoned through meditation. Incidentally: Thought and examination, as well as regret, sleep and anger, as well as desire, pride and doubt are called, the eight are said to be uncertain. That is to say, in the first group of the four uncertain mental factors, etc., they are uncertain and not minor afflictive mental factors. The reason is that thought and examination have three cases, regret has the first case, sleep has the first two cases, desire and hatred have the last two cases, and pride and doubt have no middle case. Therefore, they are not associated only with ignorance, nor are they only to be abandoned through meditation, nor are they associated only with mind-consciousness. Second, regarding classification, analyzing which mental factors arise together with which minds, analyzing the differences in which realms exist and do not exist, understanding from mental factors.

Detailed explanation of difficulties. Incidentally, there are four ways to show the categories of mind and mental factors. First, if desired, it is virtuous. And, non-virtuous without admixture, non-virtuous with admixture, and indeterminate, with two types of obscuration and non-obscuration, making five in total. First, for the virtuous mind of the desire realm, because it has investigation and analysis. The first group has two, that is, twenty-two mental factors arise. Because regret does not arise in all virtuous minds of the desire realm, regret is not present in virtuous minds, and adding regret to non-virtuous minds makes twenty-three. The essence is the mental engagement that harms the object of focus. The function is to interrupt the mind's abiding. Non-virtue is only associated with ignorance that is not mixed with other root afflictions, with ten mental factors, six afflictions, two non-virtues, and two investigations, making twenty. In the mixed, it is also associated with the first two views, and because it is not a corresponding non-virtue, it is associated with the latter three views, and twenty also arise in this way. Ignorance itself is not mentioned as an affliction, but is counted in the category of afflictions. View is included by wisdom, and there is no other entity. Because the places of virtue cannot exist, they are not actually mentioned. Attachment, anger, pride, doubt, these are the four root afflictions. And the places of minor afflictions such as anger. Regret associated with non-virtue, each counted separately, produces twenty-one. Because apart from the four root afflictions and ignorance such as anger, attachment etc. do not arise simultaneously within each other. These are afflictions that can exist independently. Ignorance has already been counted among the afflictions. Until the end, that is, Obscured indeterminate, there are ten mental factors, six afflictions, investigation and analysis, making eighteen arise. Other unobscured indeterminate, there are ten mental factors and investigation and analysis, making twelve arise. Sleep is due to weak causes, fatigue, heaviness of the body, attention to the signs of darkness, and relying on food etc., the body is unable to support and enters, involuntarily gathering the senses and mind inward. It is the basis for losing the ability to work. Due to the power of that motivation and association, it can arise without contradiction in all three of virtue, non-virtue, and indeterminate, therefore, in any virtuous etc. mind that has sleep, that sleep is added to be counted. The Niyogika school specifically (believes) regret
