There are four types: merit, liberation, decisive share, and diligence in cultivating uncontaminated virtues. Extreme pliancy is the ability of the mind to remain on its object of focus. Its function is to eliminate the obscurations of afflictions, etc. There are two types: physical pliancy arising from the five sense consciousnesses and mental pliancy arising from the mind consciousness. Alternatively, physical pliancy is when the body is as light as cotton, the waist is as level as stacked gold coins, etc., which is the ability of the body itself, not a mental factor. The commentary states that physical pliancy leads to mental pliancy, which is a limb of enlightenment. Because it is in accordance with it, it is also called a limb of enlightenment. For example, the sutras say that joy and the place of joy are taught as joy, a perfect limb of enlightenment. Anger and the reason for anger are said to be obstacles to harming the mind. And, although correct discrimination and effort are not the nature of wisdom, because they are in harmony, they are spoken of as the aggregate of wisdom. So it is said. Equanimity of action is the state of being calm, free from sinking and excitement of the mind, which is the state where actions and afflictions do not create opportunities. There are three types: first, equality in which sinking and excitement occasionally arise; second, calm abiding in which there is doubt but it does not arise; and finally, spontaneous accomplishment without doubt. Knowing shame and having embarrassment will be explained later, and their function is to restrain misconduct. There are two roots: non-attachment and non-hatred. Non-ignorance is attributed to the part of wisdom, so it is not mentioned here. Negative words have three usages: non-existence, other, and antidote. Here it is the antidote. Similarly, the other two are also like that. Their function is not to engage in misconduct such as killing. Non-harming is compassion, which is the aspect of not harming sentient beings with sticks, etc. There are three distinctions: sentient beings, Dharma, and non-object. Diligence is the joy of the mind in virtuous deeds, and its function is to perfect virtue. If one rejoices in non-virtue, that is laziness. There are three distinctions: armor, application, and irreversible diligence. These always occur in all virtuous minds.

Therefore, the objects of virtue are numerous. If it is said that faith and love are in the nature of joy and sorrow, how can they arise in one mind? Similarly, how can attention with effort and equanimity without effort, and the distraction of the desire realm with pliancy, arise simultaneously? This is because they all arise in all parts, only in different degrees, as has been said before. Other schools believe that these are virtuous in nature, but not pervasive in all virtuous minds. Ignorance is not knowing or not being clear about the results of actions, the truth, the Three Jewels, etc. It is synonymous with ignorance, unawareness, and delusion. Karma is the basis of root and near afflictions. Shamelessness is the opposite of shame. Not cultivating virtue and not guarding the mind from contaminated actions leads to the increase of evil deeds or non-virtue. Laziness is the opposite of diligence and obstructs virtuous actions. Lack of faith is the opposite of faith, and the mind is not clear. Karma is the basis of laziness. Lethargy is a state of heaviness of body and mind, and unclearness of the object, making the body and mind unable to function. Karma is an accomplice to afflictions and near afflictions. There are two types: physical lethargy and mental lethargy. Excitement is when the mind is not calm and scatters away from the object, obstructing calm abiding. These six always arise in all afflicted minds, therefore they are the many objects of affliction. The way excitement and lethargy, clarity and unclearness arise in the same mind is the same as before. In the Abhidharma treatises, lethargy is not mentioned, but forgetfulness, distraction, non-alertness, improper attention, wrong belief, ignorance, etc., are mentioned. Why are the first five of the ten arising not explained here? The Vaibhashikas believe that lethargy is in accordance with samadhi, so it is not mentioned; forgetfulness and so on are dependent on mindfulness and so on, so they are not mentioned here. But the teacher believes that lethargy, like excitement, is not in accordance with samadhi, so it is mentioned here. If it is a numerous object, is it also a numerous object of affliction? There are four possibilities: the first is the five omnipresent, the second is the five of lack of faith, etc., the third is the opposite of mindfulness, afflictions, etc., and the fourth is different from that. In non-virtue, there are two: shamelessness and lack of shame.
