Explaining the Place of the Roots. Explaining the Place of the Roots. Second, among the laws of things, the place of the roots, which is an explanation of the important distinctions. There are two: the place and the summary of the chapter. First, there are two: explaining the twenty-two roots, the main factors of the universally awakened that are produced by fabrication, and explaining how the Dharma produced by fabrication arises. First, the reason for establishing the roots, the definite number, the nature of the present situation, and the four divisions. First, from the two systems of the Vibhajyavāda and the Sutra. First, in the Sutra, it says: The Brahmin acts freely by the power of hearing of his own nature, and the twenty-two roots are from the eye root to the body root, as well as the mind, female, male roots, life, pleasure and pain, joy, displeasure, equanimity, and the five roots such as faith, the root of making the unknown known, the root of knowing, and the root of possessing knowledge. Among them, the five roots such as the eye make the body beautiful, completely protect the body, generate consciousness that corresponds to oneself, and have power over the four meanings that are not common, such as looking at one's own object. The way of protecting is that the eyes and ears can also protect the body by seeing and hearing. The other three enjoy food. The four roots of male, female, life, and mind have power over two meanings. The male and female roots can distinguish this as male and this as female, distinguishing them from sentient beings, and in particular, the male has power over the difference from the female, and the female reverses it, which are two situations. Other teachers believe that they have power over universal awakening, and these roots are for non-discipline, uninterrupted crimes, cutting off the roots of virtue, obtaining the result of discipline, and being suitable as a basis for detachment. Because eunuchs, hermaphrodites, and those with two roots are not like that. The life root connects the continuum in the same class, and maintains its continuation. The mind connects the continuum in the next life, and under the power of the mind root, the body and so on can do good and so on, so it has power in accordance with the nature of the root. Some say that this is dissatisfaction with the view of the Vibhajyavāda, because the beauty of the body is produced by the support of the root, and the protection and non-common names are produced by the root consciousness, and the gods of the form realm and the first aeon are also male, and the life root is not an affliction, so it is not suitable as a continuum connector. Thus it is said. The five feelings and the five roots such as faith.

And the three, such as the doer, and the eight, these sequentially have dominion over all defilements and purification. Because the five feelings generate the three poisons of attachment, aversion, and delusion, the five of assembly and conjunction, such as faith, are the cause of purification, and the three, such as the path of seeing, are the essence of purification. Secondly, the Sutra school believes that the eye, etc., have dominion over their own objects, such as form, etc., and the mind has dominion over all objects, so there are six faculties. Form, etc., generate consciousness, but they do not have particular dominion. The female faculty has dominion over female characteristics such as large breasts, small voice, weak mind, and affection for men, and the male faculty has dominion over male characteristics that are the opposite of these, so the female and male faculties are distinguished from the body faculty. The life faculty maintains the continuity of similar types, feeling has dominion over all defilements, and faith, etc., have dominion over purification, so the life faculty and feelings, etc., and faith, etc., are considered to be five faculties. In obtaining ultimate nirvana, the all-knowing and the all-knowing, etc., are obtained from higher to higher, so they are established as the faculty of knowing all, the all-knowing, and similarly the faculty of possessing all knowledge. The faculty of knowing all has dominion over obtaining the faculty of the all-knowing above it, the faculty of the all-knowing has dominion over obtaining the faculty of possessing all knowledge above it, and the faculty of possessing all knowledge has dominion over obtaining nirvana without remainder. Thus, from the eye, etc., up to faith, etc., are faculties, and thus the sought-after increase is explained. The "etc." in "etc." indicates that the faculty of knowing all, which is not understood, can abandon what is to be abandoned by the path of seeing, the all-knowing can abandon what is to be abandoned by the path of meditation, and the possessor of all knowledge can dominate dwelling in the bliss of the law in this life. So it is said. Secondly, regarding the determination of number. There are two views of the Abhidharma school. First, if it is merely having dominion, then ignorance has dominion over action, and hands, feet, buttocks, spans, etc., would become faculties, because they have dominion over speaking, eating, etc. The twenty-two faculties are a necessary determination of number, because they are determined from the perspective of the basis and essence or result of all defilements and purification. Among them, from the perspective of the basis of sentient beings' substance, the mind is the support of consciousness, the eye.
