and so on, and the two genders that distinguish the difference of that sentient being, and the life force on which that sentient being depends, these nine are the basis of universal defilement. The five feelings are taught because they are the fruit or nature of universal defilement. The five, such as faith, are the basis of liberation because they accumulate merit, and the three, such as omniscience, liberate, or are the nature of liberation. Thus, the number of bases and natures of universal defilement and liberation is as many as the twenty-two roots that are divided into so many. Second, or other sects, think that they are free to enter and leave samsara. The basis of entry is the six roots, because they are the basis of the substance of sentient beings, and because they rely on the six places of the intermediate state to connect with the next life. Those who are born in samsara are the male and female roots, because they are born from them. Although they do not exist in those who are born by transformation, they are important. The life force on which those sentient beings depend, and the five feelings that those sentient beings enjoy, are fourteen roots because they are free to enter samsara. Similarly, it is also true for returning from samsara. The five on which faith and so on depend. The root of omniscience that first arises in the nature of liberation, the root of omniscience that depends on liberation. The one who possesses omniscience who enjoys liberation, these are the eight roots that are different from the former ones. Third, here, the nature of the roots, the six such as the eye, and the male and female roots, that is, the eight, have been explained. The five, such as faith, and the life force and the six will be explained below. Here, the five feelings and the three uncontaminated roots, that is, the eight, are explained. The so-called body refers to all colored roots. The non-peaceful feeling that arises from it is the root of suffering. It is also said to be suffering, the feeling that arises in the retinue of the five consciousnesses such as the eye. The peaceful feeling that arises in their retinue is the root of happiness. Moreover, in the third dhyana, the peace of mind is the root of happiness, because there is no consciousness of the five doors there, so there is no feeling of the body, and after detachment from joy, that peace is not mental pleasure.

Therefore, in other places, the calmness of mind is pleasantness. Because attachment is not separated from joy, the calmness that arises within the scope of these (joys) is joy. The difference between mental pleasure and pleasantness is: the pleasantness from the desire realm to the second dhyana arises only from conceptual thoughts and is unstable, it is pleasantness. The stable abiding mental calmness in the third dhyana is mental pleasure. Mind, that is, the non-calm feeling that arises within the scope of the mind, is unpleasantness. Equanimity is the middle state of suffering and pleasure. For equanimity, the body and mind are not distinguished, but the two are combined into one, why is that? Because the feeling of the mind arises only from conceptual thoughts, not from the body. And the pleasure and pain of the body arise from the benefit and harm to the body, so they are distinguished. Equanimity is non-conceptual, and there is no benefit or harm, it arises naturally. The three paths of seeing, meditation, and no more learning are successively the five faculties of faith, etc., mind and pleasure, pleasantness, and equanimity. The nine are the three faculties of the agent, the knower, and the possessor of the knower. The uncontaminated pleasure is based on the third dhyana, not bodily pleasure, because the consciousness of the five senses and its retinue are definitely contaminated. These feelings are different grounds, not in one collection. In the fourth (dhyana): contaminated or uncontaminated? 1. Vipaka or non-vipaka? 2. With vipaka or without vipaka? 3. The difference between the three of virtue, etc.? 4. Which realm does it belong to? 5. The difference of what is to be abandoned? 6. The difference between gaining and abandoning? 7. An examination of the attainment of the roots of each of the four fruits? 8. The state of being associated? 9. Of the nine aspects, the first: the three of the knower, etc., are immaculate, the seven form aggregates, and the two of the life faculty and suffering are to be abandoned by meditation, so in general they are contaminated. The three feelings, the five faculties of faith, etc., mind and the nine are both contaminated and uncontaminated, because there are uncontaminated ones in the collection of the three paths, and the others are contaminated. In the "Compendium of Topics" commentary, etc., the basis of the first two is unpleasantness, so ten are spoken of. Second, the life faculty is vipaka, because in the good realms it is virtuous and contaminated, and in the bad realms it is non-virtuous, so it is abandonment. So, what about the Arhat abandoning life? The activity of life is to change the previous or present karma.
