As it is said in the commentary, one should show gratitude to those Bodhisattvas for the sake of practice and also for the sake of union. In reality, those beings who engage in the six perfections in this way, for the Bodhisattvas, just as the Bodhisattva has bestowed benefit upon oneself, one also repays the benefit to that Bodhisattva. By practicing the perfections in this way, the Bodhisattva's mind will be completely satisfied. Bodhisattvas do not desire other forms of repayment such as material offerings, so sentient beings also practice the perfections in this way with a mind of gratitude towards the Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva also thinks, "These beings have bestowed benefit upon me," and acknowledges their kindness. This is a special quality of the Bodhisattva, which is the absence of material expectations. Sixth is the manner of aspiration: The five aspirations of a Bodhisattva are: always aspiring and wishing for the six perfections to increase in one's own and others' minds; aspiring and wishing for the opposing factors of the six perfections to diminish and decline; aspiring and wishing for sentient beings to generate faith if they have not already, to establish those who have in virtue, and to bring those who practice virtue to maturity; aspiring and wishing for how to attain the second bhumi after attaining the first, and so on up to the tenth bhumi, and for each of the ten bhumis to become increasingly superior; and aspiring and wishing to attain unsurpassed enlightenment after surpassing the ten bhumis. Apart from these five aspirations, not even a little aspiration arises for worldly perfections, or for the path and fruit of Hearers and Solitary Realizers. This is the quality of the aspiration of the mind. Seventh is the quality of not wasting effort: Hearers and Solitary Realizers engage only for their own benefit and do not benefit others, so it is wasted. Worldly people initiate practice with expectations, but mostly without result, so it becomes wasted. However, because Bodhisattvas possess aspirations that are not inverted and are complete, whatever they do is accomplished accordingly and the quality of not wasting effort is: the four practices are not wasted. If one becomes afraid of the profound and vast Dharma of the Great Vehicle, the Bodhisattva...

If a Bodhisattva's connection to the Great Vehicle becomes wasteful, it is because Bodhisattvas do not fear the profound and vast teachings of the Great Vehicle and dispel the fears of others. Therefore, their connection to the Great Vehicle is not wasteful. If they generate the mind of enlightenment desiring worldly riches and the fruits of the path of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, then their connection to the Great Vehicle becomes wasteful. However, Bodhisattvas do not generate the mind in this way. They generate the mind for the sake of themselves and all sentient beings to attain unsurpassed enlightenment. Because they do not degenerate from the mind of enlightenment generated in this way, their connection is not wasteful. Even if they generate the mind of enlightenment, if they become doubtful because they do not know the means to accomplish enlightenment, they may turn away from the mind of enlightenment and become wasteful. However, Bodhisattvas cut off doubts about the path and fruit of the Great Vehicle, so their connection is not wasteful. If they do not practice themselves or teach others the instructions on the grounds, perfections, and meditative stabilizations of calm abiding and insight as taught by the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, it becomes wasteful. However, when Bodhisattvas obtain the instructions for practice, they practice themselves and teach others as instructed, so their connection is not wasteful. Thus, these four qualities are always non-wasteful for the children of the Buddhas. Eighth, the correct connection: The Bodhisattva who abides in non-wastefulness in this way correctly connects all actions through the three doors of body, speech, and mind without error. That is, they give the three kinds of generosity to those who are busy and impoverished, fulfilling their desires. However, this generosity is not given with the hope of benefiting oneself in this life or becoming wealthy in future lives. This is the correct connection to the perfection of generosity. Similarly, they keep vows not desiring higher rebirths in samsara, but for the sake of attaining unsurpassed enlightenment. They not only do not retaliate with body and speech against those who harm them, but also never generate anger in their minds. Thus, they are patient in all three doors of body, speech, and mind. They are patient with harm and
