Chapter Twenty: The Qualities Chapter Twenty: The Qualities In this fifth chapter on qualities, as previously stated, the qualities of Bodhisattvas who have practiced the meanings taught from aspiration to the chapter on aspects conducive to enlightenment are shown in two ways: the qualities of practice and the qualities of great praise. First, it is generally shown through three qualities. From the order of practicing the perfections, to benefiting in return, to the twelve items up to what is mainly done, explaining in detail, and showing the qualities of the wise through the establishment of teaching the Dharma separately, there are three. First, there are three qualities: the quality of having a common cause, the quality of relationship, and the quality of manifestly seeing sentient beings. First, by becoming accustomed to those paths of training for a long time, they become the nature of the Bodhisattva's mind stream, so that the paths that have arisen before are stable, and those that have not arisen arise and increase. This is what is to be shown: one's own body, etc., two verses, and the quality of relationship, the lineage of the Thus-Gone One arises, etc., shown by one verse, and these three verses are wonderful qualities. The verse after that is not wonderful, because it has a complete cause, so there is no wonder that such a result arises, so it is praise for the cause of practice, so that is also a quality. The quality of manifestly seeing sentient beings, obtaining the equality of the cause mind is, like the intelligent ones, etc., three verses, the fruit of benefiting, also being a vessel, etc., shown by sixteen verses. Entering into this explanation, therefore, according to the order of the text, wonderful, not wonderful, equality of mind, benefiting, benefiting in return, hope, not wasting, correct combination, decline and special share, image and reality, taming, prophecy, certainty, not being taken by demons, constant action, main action, and the seventeen items of establishing the Dharma separately are explained in order. The first wonder is that practicing the six perfections is wonderful. If asked how it is wonderful, then ordinary people

Since the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not have such practices, and it is impossible for others to have such practices, it is wondrous. What is it like? Merely giving things like food and clothing is something that worldly people and Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas also have, but completely giving away one's own body is something that Bodhisattvas have, and others do not. For the sake of the vows of discipline, even obtaining the perfect enjoyment of a Chakravartin, they completely give it away like spit and abandon it, and then renounce. Unlike kings and ministers with great power and authority, even if beggars and outcastes, who are inferior to themselves, harm them in any way, their minds are not disturbed, and they endure with love. They exert effort without even considering their own body and life. Even if they attain the supreme bliss of the first Dhyana and so on, they do not savor it, and therefore they again take birth in the desire realm, even in the three lower realms. Even if they attain the wisdom that distinguishes the characteristics of all dharmas, they do not conceptualize the wisdom and that dharma as signs. Such are the wondrous qualities of intelligent Bodhisattvas. Such are the results of practicing the extraordinary Paramitas. The first Bhumi is the birth into the lineage of the Tathagatas by initially obtaining the non-conceptual wisdom that transcends the world. The eighth Bhumi is the attainment of the prophecy of the Buddhas by effortlessly obtaining non-conceptual wisdom. The tenth Bhumi is the attainment of the empowerment as the Dharma Regent by the Buddhas, and these three are the results of learning. Attaining the unsurpassed Bodhi perfectly in the Buddha Bhumi is also something that others, such as Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, do not have in this world, and therefore it is considered extremely rare. Secondly, what is not so rare is that, relative to worldly people and Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, it is very rare, but relative to Bodhisattvas who have vast intention and conduct, one might think, 'Why can't they attain such a state?' It is shown in a way that is not rare. Even for the enjoyment of a Chakravartin and so on, they see it as like an impure swamp, and for all conditioned phenomena, they are free from attachment, both externally and internally.
