And like a father, it is the cause of obtaining the bodies of the three vehicles, and learning the three higher trainings such as higher morality is like a father teaching his son the crafts and customs that are appropriate to their respective lineages. In order to liberate from the suffering of samsara, it is like a father taking a wife for his son and enjoying happiness. For the sake of sentient beings, praying to the Buddha not to pass into nirvana and to turn the wheel of Dharma is like a father entrusting the king and friends to benefit his son's life and property. In order to eliminate the afflictions and cognitive obscurations in the minds of these sentient beings, it is like a father paying off the debts incurred by his son, etc., and making them disappear. In this way, through these five activities, the bodhisattvas are like fathers to sentient beings. If a bodhisattva teaches the profound, vast, and inconceivable aspects of the Great Vehicle Dharma, which are not suitable to be taught to sentient beings with small minds, they will be frightened and abandon them. Therefore, they keep these things secret from those sentient beings and do not reveal them, just as relatives in the world conceal things that would harm the lives and property of other relatives. Furthermore, when someone falls away from the three trainings, scolding them, saying, "This of yours is not good," and pointing out their faults is like relatives scolding and preventing their own relatives from doing things that should not be done. Seeing sentient beings who possess the perfect qualities of the three trainings, one should praise them and make them happy so that they do not abandon those qualities, just as relatives rejoice and praise when their relatives have done good deeds. In order to enable sentient beings to realize the noble path, giving them the essential instructions that are the means to that end is like relatives giving advice and assistance to their own relatives on internal and external affairs. Pointing out the allurements of desirable objects and unwholesome friends, etc., which obstruct the path of sentient beings, as well as the works of demons and devils, saying, "This and that,"

Just as relatives protect other relatives from enemies, imprisonment, and harm from thieves, fire, water, etc., with these five activities, the princes of the Buddhas are like the limbs of sentient beings. Bodhisattvas, for the benefit and happiness of sentient beings, truly know what is beneficial and what is not. That is, regarding the aspect of all afflictions that encompass suffering, and the aspect of purification that encompasses the path of cessation, they know them without confusion and teach sentient beings accordingly, just as friends in the world who share the same mind know the benefits and harms of their friends and tell them what they know. Bodhisattvas give all the happiness of worldly perfections, such as Brahma, Ishvara, and Chakravartin, and the happiness of non-worldly perfections, up to the state of Buddhahood, to sentient beings, just as friends give things that benefit the life and wealth of their friends both temporarily and permanently. Remaining constantly without weariness for the sake of sentient beings is like a friend not being weary of doing things for a friend. When Bodhisattvas benefit sentient beings, they are never swayed or deterred by demons or asceticism, just as a reliable friend cannot be alienated, and their friendship never changes. Bodhisattvas constantly wish that all sentient beings may attain the benefit of transcendental qualities and the happiness of worldly qualities, and they never waver from this, just as a friend constantly wishes that their friend may attain long-term benefit and temporary happiness, and does not abandon this wish. Therefore, with these five activities, the princes of the Buddhas are like intimate friends in the hearts of all sentient beings. Bodhisattvas are constantly diligent and unremitting in maturing those sentient beings who should be matured, just as servants in the world who listen to instructions are happy to do their master's work and are not lazy. To sentient beings, Bodhisattvas speak the correct path of complete liberation from all suffering, just like good servants.
