It is merely imputed as a name, and one must completely seek it out. The key point here is that names and things are suddenly connected by the mind and imputed. If we examine the meaning of the imputation, the so-called "vase" is not a single, whole substance, but is imputed from parts such as the mouth, neck, and belly. Even if these parts are broken down to atoms, if the parts are destroyed, the distinction cannot be established. Similarly, for any phenomena imputed as essence and difference, it is merely imputed by name, and there is no essence of the thing itself. One must realize that it is merely imputed to exist. By searching in this way, four complete knowledges will arise, because everything is without an object of focus, etc., as explained in ten verses. By completely seeking the four in this way in faith and practice, relying on the search, four complete knowledges will arise on the path of seeing, namely: because these four, name, thing, essence, and difference, are all without an object of focus, four kinds of wisdom of knowing as it is will arise, namely: the knowledge of knowing as it is, which possesses the complete search for names; the knowledge of knowing as it is, which possesses the complete search for things or objects; the knowledge of knowing as it is, which possesses the complete search for nature or essence; and the knowledge of knowing as it is, which possesses the complete search for differences. Among these, knowing that all names are unreal, empty, and without an object of focus is the essence. Similarly, all objects such as vases, and the essence or self-characteristic of each object, and its differences, such as the phenomena of arising and ceasing, knowing that they are all without self-nature, empty, and without an object of focus is the four complete knowledges. This is beneficial for bodhisattvas who are stable on all ten bhumis, to abandon what is to be abandoned and realize what is to be realized, or to accomplish all benefits for themselves and others. The first half of the verse explains the nature of complete knowledge, and the latter half, as stated in the commentary. Alternatively, because it is liberation from the bonds of karma, it is explained. What binds? The basis or place of bondage, that is, the characteristics of the container world, the alaya consciousness appearing as the object of focus, and the characteristics of enjoyment, that is, the six consciousnesses enjoying the six objects, and the cause or characteristic of seeds, that is, all seeds, the alaya.

That is, consciousness. Thus, it is bound by the three reasons of name or bondage. What are those that are bound? Just as it is indicated by the demonstrative word "here" or "this," together with the three that bind, the mind, the eight aggregates of consciousness, and the fifty-one mental factors such as feeling, perception, and touch, and the six from the eye faculty to the mind faculty as the basis, and the body including the physical faculty and the place, which is the form aggregate, thus binding the five aggregates. How is it bound? It is said to be bound together with the seed, meaning that it is bound by possessing the seed. The habitual tendencies or seeds of the names of places and enjoyments are accumulated in the alaya consciousness, and until they are abandoned, one will not be liberated and will be bound. Having thus identified the bondage, the method of liberation from it is explained: In the past, relying on the practice of listening, contemplating, and meditating on the Dharma, the name that is placed in front of one's mind, especially corpses and skeletons, etc., in short, whatever name is focused on by the mind, and even if it is not intentionally focused on and placed in front, sentient beings are accustomed to conceiving of names from beginningless samsara, so there is no need to intentionally fabricate them. The names of various things such as pillars and vases are inherently present, that is, whatever is naturally present in the realm of the mind. Thus, knowing that both the name that is thought about by the mind and the name that appears without being thought about do not exist, a person with the wisdom to completely destroy all that is focused on by names can cut off all bonds and attain supreme enlightenment. The way to destroy the two names is: First, the name that is thought about by the mind, the name that appears as a corpse, etc., these are merely appearances in the mind. Destroying them as not being the nature of the meaning established in their respective forms. Similarly, all things such as vases that exist in themselves are merely appearances to the mind and mental factors. Knowing that they are not established by nature or their own essence, one should meditate in this way. In this regard, the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas break down the perception of the aggregates as being pure, pleasurable, permanent, and self, and meditate on impurity, impermanence, suffering, and the absence of a self of a person, thereby attaining the enlightenment of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Bodhisattvas do not fixate on the self-nature of persons and phenomena.
