For a wise person who is skilled in explaining the four establishments, it is skillful to teach the Dharma to sentient beings through language, and to seek and understand what the meaning or definition of the Dharma is. Therefore, it should be understood that in the stage of practicing with faith and understanding, one seeks through four ways: completely seeking the names of the four dharmas, completely seeking the meaning or things, completely seeking the imputation of self-nature, and completely seeking the imputation of distinctions. For example, the names 'pillar' and 'cloth,' and the two meanings of a bulging container for holding water and a material suitable for weaving clothes. Children regard names as meanings and meanings as names, believing that names and meanings are inherently related. However, intelligent people consider that between names and things, the name on the meaning is imputed due to sudden conceptualization, and the meaning on the name is imputed due to sudden conceptualization. The suddenness that is examined is like an illusion or a borrowing, and should be completely sought or examined. If the name on the meaning is not suddenly imputed, but the name arises as soon as the meaning arises, and they are inseparable and of the same nature, then when a meaning like a vase ceases to exist, the name 'vase' should also disappear. However, even when the vase is broken, the name still exists. Similarly, the names of householders change to other names at the time of ordination, but the thing itself does not change. Since no name cannot be established on any thing, it is merely imputed for the sake of convenient communication, and names and meanings are not inherently related. After understanding in this way, regarding the establishment of essence and difference, understanding the essence of a vase as bulging with the name 'vase,' and establishing with words that indicate the difference of the vase, such as 'the vase is long' and 'the vase is impermanent,' should also be understood as sudden. Or, in the Commentary on Steadfast Intelligence, it says: Establishing the hardness of earth, the wetness of water, etc., as self-characteristics, and distinguishing and establishing all things like earth and water as impermanent, suffering, with outflows, without outflows, etc., both of these establishments are merely establishments of names and words, and are not established as their respective self-natures. Understanding this is the establishment of essence and difference. In any case, for these two types of establishments, essence and difference, it is also like that, it is sudden.
