Now, the actual [compassion] and, secondly, demonstrating its greatness with examples. Firstly, if there is no equal compassion, it is not great compassion. It becomes like the compassion of ordinary beings, Śrāvakas, and Pratyekabuddhas. How is that? Although compassion arises for sentient beings who are manifestly suffering, compassion does not arise for those who possess pleasant feelings or neutral feelings. Because it does not diminish, it is not great compassion. Bodhisattvas, however, see that no matter what contaminated feelings they experience—pleasant, painful, or neutral—they do not transcend the three kinds of suffering. Just as they have compassion for the sentient beings in Avīci hell, they equally generate compassion for sentient beings up to the peak of existence. Therefore, it is called the great compassion of equanimity. Sometimes compassion arises, and sometimes it does not, like the compassion of ordinary beings. Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas also have some compassion for sentient beings, but it is exhausted and ceases at the time of complete nirvāṇa, so it is not permanent and is not called great compassion. The compassion of Bodhisattvas arises continuously in all stages of the path of learning, and even when they enter the realm of complete nirvāṇa, it never diminishes and is permanent compassion. Therefore, it is great compassion. Compassion that is not motivated by the extraordinary intention to take on the burden of benefiting others is when worldly people mix it with their own interests and have compassion for friends and others whom they consider their own, or when they only have compassion for those who benefit them. Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not have the thought of taking on the burden of benefiting others because they realize the equality of self and others, so their compassion is not called great compassion. Bodhisattvas, from the time they attain the first bhūmi, directly realize the nature of the equality of self and others, and from the perspective of intention, there is no difference between their own benefit and the benefit of others. Compassion that is accompanied by the extraordinary intention to take on the burden of benefiting others is great compassion. If one only has compassion upon seeing sentient beings suffering, but lacks the means to actually perform the actions of saving them from suffering, it is not great compassion. Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas also only have compassion for all sentient beings who are suffering, but
