Even worldly people, for the sake of those they love, such as relatives and friends, will strive even through difficulties, but they will not strive for the sake of others. Similarly, the Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not exert themselves for the benefit of sentient beings. Bodhisattvas, by the power of great compassion, never abandon the practice of hardships for the sake of sentient beings. If a wise person cannot bear to suffer for the sake of others, then they will not even think of doing this or that for the benefit of sentient beings. Even if there is a method, they cannot accomplish it themselves, so they do not even think about it. If a person with a mind devoid of the thought of acting for the benefit of sentient beings, then they will not make aspirations to obtain a pure rebirth that benefits sentient beings, is unmixed with sin, and is undefiled by self-interest. Because the aspiration of a Bodhisattva is to do the work of sentient beings, they thus take birth in samsara. It is not like worldly people who do good deeds with the intention of obtaining the happiness of the heavens, nor is it like the Hearers and Solitary Realizers who abandon rebirth in samsara. If, by the power of aspiration, one does not obtain a good rebirth in this world that benefits sentient beings, then one will not be able to fully ripen sentient beings in that way. Either one will obtain rebirth through the maturation of karma, like worldly people, and be unable to ripen sentient beings; or one will cut off the stream of rebirth like Hearers and Solitary Realizers, and not do the work of sentient beings. Therefore, if there is no root—great compassion—then the five, from patience like a trunk to ripening sentient beings like a fruit, will not arise. If there is a root, then the way in which others follow is explained as follows: Just as when the root of a tree is moistened with water, the root becomes stable and grows, and from that, the trunk to the fruit all grow extensively. The root is moistened with the water of compassion, and in the Commentary on the Steadfast Intellect, it is said that "moistening" is loving-kindness. Some commentaries say that "moistening" is like the fine root hairs of a tree drinking the water of the earth, and the tree grows, just as it is known as drinking with its feet, and it also appears as being like the root of a root.

Although it is so, this belongs to the category of the root itself, and saying that the root is compassion itself is the meaning of this occasion. Kindness and compassion are such that if one exists in the nature of Dharma, the other will naturally be complete. Therefore, do not think that compassion itself is not the root, but identify another root as kindness. Rather, it is better to understand kindness as helping the root to grow, like watering or moistening with water, as explained. Because it is said in the root, "The water of compassion is kindness." The commentary also says the same. Therefore, "watering" means that the roots drink water, or water, or sprinkle water on the roots, or inject, and the meaning of watering or moistening with water is the usage of verbs. Therefore, in order to make the root of compassion grow, watering with water is like kindness. The mind of kindness is like water, and if the root of compassion is moistened, compassion will grow. Because, focusing on suffering beings, there is compassion that wants to be free from suffering, and from this, wanting to accomplish their benefit and happiness with kindness that hopes they have happiness, so that beings are seen as very precious only children. Just like sick parents, they will suffer for it, and strive to get rid of the disease and get happiness, without feeling the pain of hard work. Instead, they think that medicines and other methods are beneficial to this, so they are happy to work for it. Similarly, the Bodhisattva with loving kindness, Even if one personally experiences the suffering of body and sentient beings for the sake of others. Also, because of the kindness of wanting to benefit others, and for this purpose, it is considered not suffering, but a supreme thing to be accepted, so as to gain a sense of happiness. Therefore, there will be no intolerance for anything, so that the tree of patience will be wide and lush. Thus, because the tree of patience is wide and vast and lush. The door of the method of doing things for the benefit of others, the two selflessnesses, and the Dharma and methods included in the two truths, such as supernatural powers and form, are various and countless, so that the vast branches of the Bodhisattva for the benefit of others grow.
