And thus establishes them in correct wisdom. Furthermore, there are four conditions for the arising of compassion in a Bodhisattva: The objective condition is that all happiness in the three realms of samsara is pervaded by the suffering of change, and all painful feelings are pervaded by the suffering of suffering, and neutral feelings are pervaded by the suffering of conditioning, so that whatever feeling there is, it is not free from suffering, and compassion arises in dependence on that. The cause is said in the commentary to be the latent tendencies of the three feelings of pleasure, pain, and equanimity, and this is the nature of habit, so it is a neutral feeling. Until that latent tendency is abandoned, pleasure and pain will occur again and again, so the subtle suffering of conditioning is also that. Alternatively, it may also be said that the cause of the contaminated aggregates with feelings of pleasure and pain is called the suffering of conditioning. In short, the compassion of a Bodhisattva arises in dependence on sentient beings who possess the three sufferings. Having cultivated compassion in other lives, and accumulated habits of loving-kindness on the alaya consciousness, this is the causal condition of compassion. Hearing the sublime Dharma from a virtuous spiritual friend, compassion arises, this is the dominant condition. From the nature of the earlier mind of compassion, the later mind arises, this is the immediately preceding condition. Thus, from the three, such as the causal condition, the compassion of a Bodhisattva arises. Eighth, the compassion of a Bodhisattva excels in the distinction of equanimity. The compassion of a Bodhisattva should be known as equanimous. How so? Worldly people have compassion for their relatives and friends, but do not have compassion for their enemies, but rather hate them, and they do not have compassion for those in between. Hearers and self-realizers have compassion for those who are suffering, but they do not equally have compassion for all, so their compassion is not equal. But the compassion of a Bodhisattva, as mentioned above, is the great compassion that arises equally without distinction for sentient beings who possess the three sufferings, from the peak of existence to the uninterrupted hell. Therefore, to think in this way about all sentient beings

Because of contemplation, contemplation is equal, so compassion is equal; saving sentient beings who are suffering, such as those in hell, similarly up to the peak of existence, saving all sentient beings, because of accomplishing equality, compassion is equal; towards any kind of sentient beings, there is no attachment or hatred, because of being free from desire, compassion is equal; I, sentient beings, and compassion, all three do not fixate on characteristics, understanding that everything is emptiness, with the same taste, so compassion is equal; the wisdom that does not fixate on the three spheres, from the eighth bhumi onwards, obtains purification from effort and the movement of characteristics, therefore, because of obtaining complete purification before that, compassion becomes equal. Ninth, compassion becoming supreme: Generally, just meditating on the four immeasurables such as loving-kindness, the gods of the form realm and the Hearers and Solitary Realizers also have it, but the way in which Bodhisattvas meditate on the four immeasurables becomes supreme is: Bodhisattvas meditate on loving-kindness etc. with their own minds, because of the habits of meditating on loving-kindness etc. in previous lifetimes, in this life and future lives, they increase more and more, therefore such meditation is more supreme than others; they greatly rejoice and have faith in the Dharma Sutras that possess the four immeasurables; and they have the characteristics of the nine differences in thought mentioned above; or they are skilled in samadhi; especially from the eighth bhumi onwards, without effort, loving-kindness etc. are naturally accomplished, therefore it is the mastery itself; the Bodhisattva's meditation on the four such as loving-kindness, is that the meditator I, the object sentient beings, the characteristics of the four immeasurables to be meditated on, are seized by non-discriminating wisdom; from obtaining the eighth bhumi onwards, the Bodhisattva who has entered that bhumi, their activities are integrated and closely connected, therefore it becomes supreme. Fourth, the conclusion of the chapter on offering and reverence immeasurable: As it has been taught, towards the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, a very pure mind of faith arises, believing that they possess the nature of inconceivable qualities, and of Dharma robes and clothes, flowers and incense etc.

Offering and, prostration and praise proclamation and circumambulation, etc., and respectful practice according to the teachings, etc., with great respect, offering extremely, and that offering is not just a few times occasionally, but always or constantly offering, possessing this, for the benefit of oneself and others, all worldly and transcendental accomplishments can be obtained. Similarly, the qualities of the virtuous friend as mentioned above, and in addition to that, the qualities of the virtuous friend shown in the sutras and shastras, such a virtuous friend with qualities, if relied upon, will generate immeasurable merits, as it is said, possessing this, a virtuous friend who benefits this life and all future lives, constantly relying on him, can also obtain all accomplishments. By benefiting sentient beings with the nature of loving-kindness towards all beings, the four immeasurables of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, one can also obtain all accomplishments. Offering and reliance mainly accomplish self-interest, and the four immeasurables mainly accomplish the interest of others, as it is said in the explanation. In general, either one can accomplish both benefits. From the Great Vehicle Sutra Ornament The eighteenth chapter, the chapter on offering, reliance, and immeasurables, is explained. The eighteenth chapter, the chapter on offering, reliance, and immeasurables.
